That's cute, Francis is trying to be the voice of reason. The guy who's always first in line to crap on anything and everything Calgary Flames.
He kind of has a point though, you can't roll into next season with Backlund as your most veteran center. I'm waiting to see the term and cap number before passing judgment. Something tells me this is going to be a short term deal with a 'we need to hit the cap floor' kind of price tag. CP meltdown ensues.

Has someone posted the photo of Stajan and his GF? I've seen it here before. I developed new respect for Matty after that.

If the rumor is true, Burke is only doing it to keep the Flames competitive - for the top draft pick for the next couple of years at least. That's how you rebuild, boyz&galz.

Good news. He's great at nothing but ok at everything and can move down the depth chart if the flames start getting better players.
Going rate for these guys seems to be 3-4 years 10-15 m range so I'd guess on the high side of that given the cap is going up. Just a guess.
Does his contract even matter though? Whether the flames tank or build over the next 3-4 years I don't see cap space as an issue.

I'd rather convert Colborne to Wing. I think he'll be a better winger then center... that being said I'd still rather see Stajan moved and give Knight a shot. We have a ton of cap room... we can overpay some vet for a short term deal in the offseason if need be.

Why are we talking about Tanguay, what does he have to do with the signing or not signing of Matt Stajan?

Possibly related to the signing is that Baby Stajan is due in a couple of months. Perhaps he is trying to plan out longer term where he is staying instead of the Misses having a child while he's bouncing around teams as a rental and UFA.

Out of all our vets, Stajan would of been the one I wanted re-signed the most. Interested to see the contract.

Of course he is. He's a legitmately a 3rd line NHL quality center, but he plays on a team where he happens to be the best center.
Which illustrates exactly why we would re-sign him. We need someone like him who is willing to play that role, so we can give our younger players the proper exposure and the proper ice time as they get comfortable with the NHL, versus getting them killed. Stajan gets to bite that bullet for the youngsters.

Sure... but you would kind of hope that next year as a non-rookie Monahan get's less of those sheltered/offensive zone minutes.

There's always talk of not going "full Oilers" and letting the kids do everything around here. I think if we're interested in doing that then keeping Stajan around is a decent move. If we were to sign a player of his calibre on the open market we would almost certainly have to overpay because not many players will want to join a team that's more or less at point zero, and spend their prime in the basement of the league. Stajan is willing to stay because he's comfortable here, doesn't have to relocate his family and is a part of the leadership core here. He's versatile, and reliable on the ice and seems to be a good guy off the ice.
As long as Burke hasn't given him something stupid in either years or dollars( 5+ years or over 4.5 million) this doesn't really effect our long term plans and that should be the focus of the front office.

Don't be surprised if he gets decent money, not saying he is worth it but we do have to reach the floor for he next few seasons. We are going to suck and will have to overpay, he may be helping more with the younger guys than we know and if so, why not keep him around?
