Sorry, I misread.
Yes. Of course people in power positions are under greater scrutiny and must be held to higher accountability
But in this case the comments are nowhere near comparable. Hate, racism, and threats of violence are in a whole other league to what Hartley is accused of saying.

So because he's not involved in a lawsuit, he's credible?
ANYWAY,
I don't believe he was ever forced to play on a broken foot. He even said it himself: "I thought I had a broken foot...". The guy had a hard enough time keeping up at the best of times. There's no way he was out there with a broken foot, fighting or not.
Is threatening to send a fringe player to the minors really a big thing? Isn't that what they all do?
I can sympathize with these fellas -- I know they have (literally) a brutal job -- but it is what they signed up for. He was a fighter. That's the only reason he was in the NHL. It's like saying "The coach told me to do my job and that I wouldn't have my job if I didn't do my job, so he was a bully...".

Yeah the fact he's standing by some principle at the cost of financial reward in this issue to me suggests he doesn't have much of agenda in calling out someone who acted badly towards him previously. It also does lend some credibility to his character. Calling out Hartley would help him directly if he were part of the lawsuit, so in that case there would be an obvious COI in his statements.
And… it's NOT like "the coach told me to do my job." The coach is being a prick and a bully, largely by just how he's acting. It's funny in that lunch conversation with that football player today, he sort of said a lot of the same things Parker did. Yeah, this is the culture of playing hurt when you're a fringe player, etc, but some coaches are just nastier about it. As I mentioned, he had one coach that he had singled out as being particularly heartless. Hartley seems to fit that bill.
We also discussed the Incognito comparison. He didn't agree with Incognito, but thought that entire situation was blown out of proportion. He didn't care much about the use of some racist terms as he agreed guys (including white guys) toss that word around a lot in a locker room without bad intention (my friend is black FWIW), and thought the "death threats" on Martin were sort of laughable. I mean, Incognito wasn't really going to kill Martin, let along rip off his head and poop down his throat. Athletes talk crazy some times.

Death threats, racially derogatory language, threats of violence and hate are not comparable to a coach threatening to demote a player, even if he did use colourful language.
|
I'd agree. But I would counter that the "death threats, racially derogatory language, threats of violence and hate" can't be taken at face value in that case. They need some context, and btw the Dolphins players, black and white, who have supported Incognito (and not Martin) pretty much agree. The threat of demotion by coach who expects you to play hurt and risk hurting yourself more, especially if done mean-spiritedly, absolutely can be taken at face value.

In the Gino Odjick thread, the article says that Gino recently drove to Calgary to meet with Bob Hartley.
Quote:
Odjick was Bure’s closest friend when they played together on the Canucks. A few days after Bure’s jersey retirement ceremony, Odjick decided to drive to Quebec to help clear his head.
He made a stop in Calgary, where he spoke with Flames coach Bob Hartley. He then travelled to Saskatchewan where he hoped to see a medicine man for treatment of his condition. But when got word of his father’s death, Odjick headed immediately for his home town of Maniwaki, Que.

Racial slurs and death threats need to be taken in context but calling someone an ####### and telling them they're going to be huffing chocolate fumes is disgusting and way worse...okay buddy.

Not to go all ad-hominem, but Scott Parker has had the reputation for being a whiner long before this article was published. He wasn't a great enforcer either, I can imagine Hartley was frustrated with him. That being said, I worry that he's being too tough on guys like baertschi or Backlund.
