Goldwater also blatantly race baited, so lets not go too far.
Yeah, probably one of the reasons I disliked him a lot but at that time race baiting in the States was common.
Here's Governor George Wallace who was a presidential candidate in the same era.
Quote:
“ In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny, and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.[17][18]
I contend that the present day far right is just as racist (Obama birth certificate, states rights, gerrymandering, lose of voting rights) as back in the 60s, just not so open about it.
Yeah, but don't fool yourself, he had a lot of influence and don't forget he was a southern Democrat who led the south to becoming a Republican stronghold.
Quote:
In Wallace's 1998 obituary, The Huntsville Times political editor John Anderson summarized the impact from the 1968 campaign: "His startling appeal to millions of alienated white voters was not lost on Richard Nixon and other GOP strategists. First Nixon, then Ronald Reagan, and finally George Herbert Walker Bush successfully adopted toned-down versions of Wallace's anti-busing, anti-federal government platform to pry low- and middle-income whites from the Democratic New Deal coalition."[15] Dan Carter, a professor of history at Emory University in Atlanta added: "George Wallace laid the foundation for the dominance of the Republican Party in American society through the manipulation of racial and social issues in the 1960s and 1970s. He was the master teacher, and Richard Nixon and the Republican leadership that followed were his students."[16]
Sad but I think that the good old days of openly racist politicians was preferable to the idiots we have today. Instead of 10% of the population being reduced to second class citizens, now 90% could find themselves in that situation.
I contend that the present day far right is just as racist (Obama birth certificate, states rights, gerrymandering, lose of voting rights) as back in the 60s, just not so open about it.
Go sign up for the Tea Party version of Facebook. They're very open about it.

I like Bernie. It's funny what he says at the end about the Koch brothers and what I said a few pages back

It's too bad the Koch brothers couldn't be poor and uninsured for a few years.

Well, there was some polling done today that showed the republicans down to a 24% approval rating. That's the lowest it's ever been by a wide margin.
They were saying that if the election was next month instead of next year, you likely would see a wave election where all the tea baggers up for re-election would get ousted by democrats. It still is a distinct possibility even though it isn't till next year.
Even veteran pollsters were shocked at how bad the poll numbers were today, and one of them said that this was one of those polls that you might only see 4 or 5 times in your entire lifetime.

I think the Tea Baggers are safe because they're doing EXACTLY what they promised to get themselves elected which is try to kill health care.
Their voters eat this #### up and everyone else just watches from afar in horror.

I doubted it before, but with the odds so heavily stacked in their favour, maybe Hillary will run and win.
With both houses firmly democractic, the federal government could really start to get things done, vs. the last decade of gridlock.

The thing is that there are enough seats that aren't "safe" that if there is enough outrage, that they could all flip giving the Dems a majority in all 3 parts of the government, let alone any backlash against the actual tea party nutcases in districts that aren't entirely safe.

If the Dems to take the house and keep the senate, you'll see things like the American Jobs act and a bunch of other jobs plans be enacted getting the government out of this period of stalled economics. Once 2016 hits, it would be almost impossible for the republicans to take back the office.

I could see a guy like Christie winning the presidents office as he seems to keep his distance from the Tea Party. That's if he could win the nomination which could happen if the Tea Party is destroyed. I don't like him but I can see the possibility of him or Jeb Bush winning. I don't know if the Democrats have any strong candidates other than Hillary at this time. Hillary is big with the female voters but can she carry enough of the male vote. Hey I heard Jesse Ventura with Howard Stern is going to run as an independent.

Marco Rubio is my pick for the Republican ticket. He ticks all the boxes for what they need to win - crazy right wing enough to appeal to the base, yet Hispanic enough to get the Latino vote, and yes, I realize that most Latinos don't consider him Latino enough because he's Cuban, but heck, Obama is technically half white yet still got 95% of the black vote.
Kelly Ayotte will be president one day, might not be for another twenty or thirty years, but I really think she'll be the first female president.
Hillary Clinton is the obvious favourite for the Democratic nomination, so much so that the next favourite is Andrew Cuomo at 14-1. We are so far away from the primaries even getting going so it is tough to make a prediction. It is the Republican's nomination to lose, much like the Democrats could have ran a paper weight against McCain and won after eight years of Bush. Evan Bayh would be a great president, if he can be convinced to throw his hat in the ring, which I very much doubt.

That means absolutely nothing. Very few black people vote for the Republican Party. Clinton, Gore, and Kerry all won the black vote by huge margins too.

Clinton was twice as black as Obama.
