I'm with kyuss275 on this one. I also remember Iggy saying that.

I think the "no" answer is wishful thinking of Flames fans. If the flames had chosen to rebuild in the 2 years prior, i highly doubt Iggy would have wanted anything to do with it. If anybody watched his farewell press conference it was pretty obvious that Iggy wants nothing to do with rebuild situations and i don't blame him.

To those saying Iggy would have waived sooner if asked, do you have any reason to think he wouldn't have done the same thing (pick which team he wanted to go to, thus limiting the return)?

So essentially, we don't know that Iginla would have waived his NTC any sooner

I love to discuss Iggy as much as the next guy, but I don't quite think this thread is supposed to be about him.

Agree.
IIRC, he was quoted in the Herald last summer saying exactly that.
Also, IIRC, King, and/or Feaster were quoted as late as last fall, that the plan has always been (and continues to be) for Iggy to retire as a Flame. Waiving the the NTC was considered a very unrealistic, hypothetical situation, at least in the public pronouncements.

@VickersFC: The next cut at #Flames camp could come at any minute. "One bad practice..." Hartley said.

Did the flames have a practice yesterday or today? Normally a lot more updates when they have a practice.

Yesterday and today. This is the only other update I found today:
“@VickersFC: Glencross and O'Brien got a little physical in practice. "Two kids in the sandbox fighting over a Tonka truck," said Hartley.”

Another reason I didn't think Glencross deserved to wear the "C". I still hope a couple of the "kids" are around for their 9 games this year.

He was asked a couple of seasons ago by the media, and publicly said he would waive if he was asked. Not even 'consider'. He stated that if the Flames did ask him to waive, he would do so.
Go back and do some searching - sure you would find it. Much ado about nothing anyways.

Is Sven wearing a grey sweat suit? My God. Is he going to ask for a trade to the Oilers?

Firstly, the Flames had no organizational depth when he took over. Do you trade Iginla sooner and try to kick start a rebuild with a larger return? Or do you string together a couple drafts and build up your prospect depth and try to add to that depth? I personally like the depth approach because I feel it creates competition as well as spreads the pressure these kids will inevitably get around to a much larger pool.
Secondly, Iginla was arguably the most important player in franchise history and there was genuinely a belief among the owners and management team that they could win with him as their captain. Obviously it didn't work out in the end but I can't blame them for trying. Especially after going through the mid 90's when this team was ripped apart to save a buck.
|
I don't quite agree with that. I know management had that belief, but it was an extremely misguided one, and one they deserve to take some heat for. Among fans, it seemed like the majority could see the writing on the wall.
Anyways, back to my initial post, my main problem with Feaster is that he continually underwhelms in the returns in his trades. This is why I am happy Brian Burke is here. I will be the first to agree that Feaster has done a great job in building a quality prospect pool, but in evaluating him I will not forget about his past mistakes until he turns the Flames into a competitive team. He has been our GM for only 3 years now, so it is hardly like I am digging into ancient history bringing up the Regehr trade.

He's the Phantom of the Saddledome. Ever since the flood, there's this secret lake on the event level, see, and on an island in the lake lives the mysterious Phantom, Iggy, all alone. He is training one of the ice girls to become a prima-donna forward and save the Flames' franchise. Her name: Christine Sedin.
