From the G&M's Josh Wingrove twitter feed:

CP CEO, on why they didn't wait to inspect bridge foundation: "How long was that going to be? We’re jeopardizing commerce as it speaks."

global streaming right now
http://globalnews.ca/news/675966/bre...idge-collapse/

Notes:
- Apparently it is believed that the damage (scoured) was under water and so impossible to see... bridge had been expected 18 times since flooding began - 2 times a week is normal.

- Been on it since 4:45am this morning. All fed and provincial regulators and authorities were notified by 5:30am

- 3:30 am it happens, east bound train. Edmonton origin, to montreal? - was traveling at 8.9 mph

- Oil product is on 5 cars, used in oil and paint and cleaners.

- Early tomorrow should be the time that they have the train off the bridge. Currently pumping to a nearby train.

- Saying they did everything they wanted to do and would not change anything in hindsight - regarding how the bridge was inspected and how often.

- They say if the rails are straight and level then things are ok below. Until this morning it was fine.

- Systems in the track that detect when the rails are compromised.

- Claiming no other way to accurately inspect a bridge in this water... i.e. to rough for a diver. They basically feel their inspections are adequate, regardless of this, and that they did all they could.

- The part they think failed was pilings that went to riverbed, (scoured) originally built in 1912 but it had been rebuilt several times since then

- Train in jepopardy is cabled to stable train, and so is in no way in danger of falling into water now.

- They have other routes so customer product will not be affected.

- CFD is in charge of scene.

- They felt their meeting with Nenshi was very positive and his (Nenshi's) earlier comments was why they met.

scrum is over

Yup, that's the CP I remember. Sorry Redliner, you're not going to find any sympathy over here.

"We can tell from the tracks if there is something going on below..." I bet it was magic that caused this compromise on this bridge...

Ahhh, no, the clusterfata of a day I had today was a direct result of this practice failing!

Nobody's looking for sympathy, just pointing out that people (Nenshi) need to make sure they have their facts straight before they go on air and tee off on a respected company that also happens to be the oldest corporate citizen in their community.

For the record, I am no fan of E. Hunter Harrison's policies or style of management. Many people I have spoken to have indicated that Canadian Pacific is indeed a very different place now from what it was prior to him taking over. I'd love to be a fly on the wall if Mr Harrison is indeed currently meeting with Nenshi as reported. I'm sure that would be a very interesting conversation.

For those labelling me a "CP apologist" and threatening a class action lawsuit for "wasting your time", fill your boots. I'm sure Judge Judy will have a field day with that one.

That was me, you can refer to the post directly, it's in this thread. You were not who I was thinking of, but you can be added to my disdain, if you like. Furthermore, my comments were in jest, I am unsure how you failed to realize that.

I have a question for any engineers or someone who may be able to answer:

What do these inspections involve? They say that nothing under water was checked and the reason for the collapse is because this bridge, unlike the cities bridges was not build into the bedrock.
During flooding like what we have had, the banks and underneath the water seem to be the most important spot to check.....no?

The government probably doesn't require that underwater supports be inspected regularly. CP doesn't do anything they don't have to. Like I've repeated a bunch of times, they don't have to do anything more than the minimum. They are protected by miles of ancient red tape.

Oil companies get a bad rep? CN and CP are just as bad but with added immunity.

paraphrased from presser: piers not inspected due to murky water, inspection was based on level and parallel lines of tracks indicating all good. Admitted that this was a unique situation but also stated that this practice is/will be used going forward for other bridges.

Also said: company inspector numbers are the same as they were last year but the question was not asked regarding the experience level of the inspectors, which I thought was a very good point that somebody raised in this thread.

I also need to make this commute - leaving in about 30-45 minutes... Hopefully it's not too crazy.

Just came from downtown. Was slow from Glenmore to Southland, as usual.
