Interesting idea.
Sharks have three 2nd rounders:
#49
#50
#57/58/60/61 (Depending on Penguins finish)

Not if you think the primary jobs of a NHL GM are drafting, player development, and cap management. Trades are exciting, but the best GMs rarely make them. They don't have to.
And the Flames were in decline before the Phaneuf and Jokinen trades. Nobody outside Calgary thought that team was going anywhere.

Absolutely.
Makes sense for Calgary as they are trying to add as many assets as possible. Havlats contract is done in 2 years, if he stays healthy and puts up some numbers the Flames could swap him at the end of it for more assets. Only thing that might make Calgary think twice is while Havlat is the much bigger player, he is probably less physical than Cammalleri.
Makes sense for San Jose as it free's up cap space for San Jose to extend Couture and Pavelski at the cost of a couple picks, while getting a solid top 6 player with no contractual commitments beyond next season.

Rumors are that San Jose is done with Havlat after all his injuries.
They are getting a less injury prone player in Cammalleri and the better player in the past two seasons.
Also frees up $5 mil in cap space for the Sharks in 2014-2015 when Marleau, Thorton, Pavelski and Couture are free agents.

I don't think the picks part is good for SJ but to take a year off of some cap space when their two up and comers are due for raises. Its a long term solution for them.

Because at the trade deadline in 2014 Cammalleri will be worth a late 1st round pick?
As a Flame fan I don't want Havlat who is in rapid decline since he left Chi in 2009 ....he has a NMC and has 2 years left on his contract.
The Sharks are in Cap trouble and can't even think of adding 2M for next season as a lateral move.
I could see them going Havlat and a 2nd and/or a 3rd for Stempniak.... saves them 2.5M in cap space.
Or Havlat and a 3rd for Stajan saves them 1.5M plus 5M the next year.
Havlat for Tanguay would make sense..... Seems like both teams consider these guys problem children.

Speaking of size on the backend... 6'6'' 230lbs dman Jeff Schultz has reportedly requested a trade:
http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2...equests-trade/
Quote:
The longtime Caps defenseman has requested a trade, according to the Washington Examiner.
The news comes after the 27-year-old averaged a career-low 14:15 in ice time during the 2013 season and became increasingly frustrated with his role on the team.
According to the Examiner’s Brian McNally, Schultz first requested a move in mid-March when it became apparent head coach Adam Oates bumped him down the depth chart (this coming from Schultz’s agent, Jarrett Bousquet).

Correct me if I am wrong but did Feaster hint at using the 2014 1st as a tool to move up last night? I could swear I heard him use that as an example as to how they might try to trade up.

And which of these will get a raise ?? Couture is a RFA ... Thornton and Marleau will be 34... No more 7M deals for these guys. Pavelski might get a bit more as a UFA but is already making 4M as a third line centre.

There is no cap on how much you can sign a RFA to...so I don't know how that affects Couture's re-signing. He's going to be getting 5m + easy from SJ.

Very soft as well. Big, but soft and slow sounds like CP would have a new whipping boy.

If Mackinnon is left at #3 next years #1 and the St.L pick and Stajan to Tampa (they need a centre after they buy out Vinny)
Or to Florida next years first and this years first #6 for Mackinnon and their 2nd #31 overall.
Or to the preds next years first and the St.L pick for Barkov.
Incredible that the Flames had to go get 6 pts from of the 3 games against Det, Min and Ana .... 4 pts less and they finish with 38 points and 2nd pick overall...

Trading next year's number 1 is a horrible decision. We're going to be bad next year, patience shouldn't be a 4 month thing.

Havlat + for Cammalleri is an interesting proposal. Would definitely be interested in that.

According to caps fans Jeff Schultz is horrible. One of the problems they had with boudreau and dale hunter was how much ice time they gave to Schultz.

I agree unless we are able to hold onto the 6th pick as well. I rather pick 1, 6 in this draft than 6th this year and 1-10 next year. Having said that I don't think 22, 27-30, 2014 1st is enough for the Avs pick

Saying a few of the veterans are not part of the solution is telling, "meaning they might be part of the problem" It's no secret we have had some very poor efforts from specific players who were counted on to step up; Especially when Feaster put all his eggs in one basket for "them" as they wanted to make the playoffs.. I remember just before Tangs got hurt at the end of the season it didn't look like he was putting much effort.
