try the one hand windmill, freezes the cpu fairly often.......for right handed player, hold L2 and RS to the left then down, hit L1 and move RS up. well timed poke checks are devastating on the forecheck. protect puck can act as a super agility button. also are you telling me you don't poke the cpu when he hugs the boards???

That's a different situation altogether. I'm talking the open ice poke check.
As for all those complicated dekes, I have neither the time nor the energy to perfect them. Besides, skill stick seems to do the job I require. Defense is the aspect of the game that drives me nuts.
Anyway, this thread should be for NHL 13. Sorry for derailing somewhat.

Defense is hard, Yamer.
The guys at EA clearly designed a game for offense, as there is very little you can do as a defender other than play sound positional D.
Having said that, I use the poke very effectively, probably my best tool in offline play (besides crushing hipchecks).

Took a tour of EA yesterday and got to play me some NHL 13. Graphics look much much better. Played the Winter Classic and it looks like a sunny day. All in all, pretty impressed and liked the new AI in committing to defensive systems.

Sounds like the computer's going to be even tougher to score on than it already is.

What they really need to fix is all the stupid slowdown during online games. It's pretty ######ed that someone can pause the game for almost a minute and everyone has to sit around waiting. Why the F is there even a pause option for online play??? Keep the game running smoothly. It also sucks when someone quits the game everyone has to wait. If a player wants to leave, dump them and keep the game running.
It's also very annoying that at the end of each period, unless every players presses A, we have to sit and watch replay after replay, then we get to watch 30 seconds of an overhead view, and then we have the stat screen. FFS, make it so when the period is done, it goes straight to the stat screen for 10 seconds at the most, then back to gameplay. These issues have been in the game since NHL07 and its ridiculous how the flow of online play can be slowed down due to these issues. It's almost expected now that when you play online with multiple users, that you will have to sit at a bunch of pause screen/replay screens for half the game.

I've been bitching about this for 4 years now (you can go re-read the old threads ha), and they are getting better, but I've come to the realization a few years ago that they will never get rid of the pauses and slow downs.

Ya I've been bitching about it forever too. It got better after '08, but its still not good enough. I just don't understand how its possible that in a multiplayer game of 12 players, you can have each person individually pause a game when they want. You can't do that in FPS multiplayer, so why is it done here? And we really don't need to sit at a overhead view of the arena after each period for a minute and just sit there...waiting. I heard that NHL2K12 (or 13) is supposed to be an entirely new revamped NHL series that is coming out this year, so unless EA fixes these (what should be easy) issues I'll be trying that game out instead.

Where have you heard that? I haven't heard any rumours of 2K coming out with a hockey game this year. I'm pretty certain they won't be coming back until the next generation of consoles.

Ya I've heard nothing about 2k doing anything. Those games were so incredibly bad by the end that series is salted earth in my books.

Nm, I googled it and found out that the entire series is being cancelled unfortunately. That sucks, it would be nice if there was an alternative to the EA series.

An actual competitor, sure, but 2K fell on their faces after EA introduced NHL 07's new mechanics. It's like if the Canadiens had to worry about losing the Norris division title back in the 70s.

i thought 2k9 (last one i played) was great....just had the unfortunate problem of glitches that froze the game far, far, far too often

Yzerman and Sakic are awesome. Baertschi is pretty good too.
If you're looking for work (I'm not sure you are), I'd suggest more retired players...Lidstrom maybe?
