Some advertising is a direct attempt to sell, but much of it - and this in particular - is about brand recognition. It is well documented that when people do need to find a product and make a choice, they are more likely to choose a brand they are comfortable/familiar with.
That is why many commercials are more about feel-good things than they are about the products/companies in question.

Authenticity: A Gibson guitar is far less "authentic" and is also less collectable when it becomes a TD Canada Trust Gibson Les Paul. As much as I hate them, the Oilers are more authentic than the Montreal Canadians at the moment.
Integrity: I get that the ad doesn't have as much to do with this, but the team is still accepting and representing all of the past and future mistakes made by the corporation that is also next to the team logo (definitely more so than a logo on arena boards). I'm sure there must be some sort of clause that allows for a team to opt out in case of a major scandal. No one wants an Enron logo on a jersey in the aftermath of a scandal. Also, why is it okay to advertise for alcohol and not tobacco? I get that the WHO (in 2011) recognizes that tobacco kills 6 million per year and alcohol kills 2.5 million, but why is the one that has a greater chance of affecting innocent lives okay to advertise? Any team that advertises alcohol or gambling next to their logo is further compromising integrity. I say "further" because they are already advertising these things. It will now however, be right next to the logo and on the jersey that kids also cheer for, and that is absolutely a major difference.
Principles: An individual with principles would have to wrestle a bit before selling a spot on their brand for money. That wrestling is most likely due to principals. You have to sidestep some principles in order to accept money to water down an image or product.
I once paid to watch games, but when they put ads on the helmets and started to push and advertise gambling, I decided they wouldn't see any more of my money.
I'll try to say it another way. An ad on a NHL jersey is literally the visual of selling out. Selling out happened long ago, but now it's more in our faces than ever before. By visual, I mean it is getting more and more obvious with every passing year to the point that jerseys are now formerly beautiful jerseys. I'm not trying to be an ass, I'm just trying to clarify what I originally meant and what I probably wasn't clear enough about.

Ok, I can see where you’re coming from better from that angle. It’s definitely a visually in-your-face reminder that it’s a product and it’s about the money. I also don’t think you’re being an ass fwiw.
I still don’t agree on the whole authenticity kind of angle. To me it’s like Britney Spears doing a Pepsi ad (not something you would call at odds with their image or brand). I think you see it as more of an anti-establishment punk band lending their music to a Wells Fargo commercial. I just don’t see any NHL clubs standing for anything that is particularly at odds with corporate advertising. If there was a situation where a club consistently supported something like You Can Play but then went ahead and accepted money from a sponsor that also sponsored anti-LGBTQ organizations or something, that would be more in line with “selling out” to me.

Well its ugly.. I hate it.. but as fans we are idiots as we will complain about it however we will still go out and purchase the jerseys.. So its a no brainer for the NHL.

The ads look especially jarring on the original six jerseys. On a Vegas jersey an ad doesn't seem so out if place, but on a Habs jersey or a Leafs jersey, it just feels so jarring.

Of all organizations I'm kind of surprised the Leafs went this route. I can understand teams in markets where there aren't sellouts going this route but the Leafs are a license to print money. How much money does MLSE need?

Arguably, they have an obligation to the players to maximize league-wide HRR.
As one of the teams with no cap space and 3 players with cap hits over $10 million, it's in their best interest to do what they can to get the players made-good so the cap can start rising by a sizeable amount each season again.

So now when fans boo the Leafs their management can just claim they were mooing and that it is super effective brand propagation?
