You see, before, people knew where to find stuff, they found it, they left. The test users for the new site design had to faff around looking for stuff that used to be easy to find, but now is hidden or completely absent. They start by saying, ‘Where the #### did they put that? I know where it used to be,’ and end by saying, ‘#### this ####,’ and going away.
But they spend lots of time before they go away, and that drives engagement numbers. The fact that they may never come back doesn't register, because the testers weren't measuring that.
