The other thing is that Ovechkin is a different type of player than the current top 3 scorers, I never saw Howe play but maybe he's a bit like that. Power forward that scores a lot of goals.
The 30 thoughts podcast had a pretty good overview of AO this week
This isn’t it the historic Ovechkin. He’s on pace for career high assists and scoring very few goals in his traditional way. He’s reinvented himself as a weapon at 36. Impressive

I'm sure his goal for a while was winning a cup and that looked like it wasn't going to happen there for a while cause they kept losing to Crosby and the Penguins. It's probably why Ovie celebrated the way he did.
But now that that's achieved by him he's made the scoring title his new goal. It does look like he's on a mission.
Since I last neglected this thread, Ovechkin has gone on a tear, scoring five goals in his last five games, including a hat-trick on 26 November in Florida. He is now but 16 goals behind Jaromir Jagr for third all-time, and has played an astonishing 511 fewer games.
Still kind of bugs me that Jim Hughson ruined his epic nickname by misunderstanding what people were going for by calling him Alex the Gr8. It's not Great Eight, it's GrEight. But because all his pbp he referred to him as Great Eight, now everyoje calls him that.
Dumb grip I know, but can't help thinking about that everytime I see his nickname.

I think it was actually Ron MacLean who started that. He was the first person that I heard refer to him as the Great Eight.
Ron MacLean is the worst.

I was thinking about that yesterday catching up on this thread. It is pretty impressive that the Caps and Ovechkin have been able to work that same spot for so long. So many good athletes have their niche and coaches are eventually able to scheme around it. Yet here we are 15 years later and everyone knows that's his spot and yet it still works.

I still remember a game at the Dome a few years back, we had company tickets ice level in the attacking zone. The spot Ovi likes to shoot was right in front of us, and I was commenting to my co-worker, I hope we see a powerplay in the second for the Caps, cuz we can see Ovi score in front of us. Like clockwork, that happened, and Ovi scored from there. Everyone knew that's where he'll be, but teams have still not been able to stop it over the years.

Sort of related but it bugs me when I hear people call him "Oh-Vee" instead of Ovi.
“It’s not even a question that he will pass me, and I think it’s great,” Gretzky told David Waldstein of The New York Times last week. “He’s well on his way to 40 or 50 goals this year, maybe more. There is no doubt that, ultimately, he will break the record.”
