Nope, they needed a win, nothing else would do.

Nothing would have changed with just that one goal. If teams playing different had allowed Ukraine to score another goal, then yes.

I'm currently re-watching Portugal v Netherlands. This was Ronaldo's best game in a Portugal jersey. 2004 SF vs Holland, Spain friendly last year and the Bosnia playoff second leg are the other standouts.

As much as I would like to see a repeat performance from him, I see a drop off coming. Not because the Czechs are so good, it's because the Dutch were so bad on Sunday. They were embarassing.

I expect Portugal to win, but this will be a lot closer than many portugal fans think. I hope Bento gives Almeida the start up front. I haven't seen anything from Postiga to warrant a 4th consecutive start and Oliveira is good as a sub to use his speed against some tired legs.

which is where video replay coming in is a massive problem

because the goal was 100% offside, but with video replay England end up getting screwed there and it's allowed

I hope they have some type of contingency plan for when they introduce it, i.e the goal can't come from a player who was offside or committed a foul etc.

We were reminiscing about that the other night. About our only source of footie was Soccer Hour on TSN on Thursday night with Graham Leggat. Used to love his commentary!

This is going to be an interesting game.

In the group stage Portugal went into the game with Germany as underdogs that were fully expected to lose, and they didnt disappoint. But as such they played defensively and worked the counter.

Against Denmark the two teams were effectively even and the game played out as such and eventually turned into a shootout.

When they played Holland they were once again the underdogs, but against a very poor and desperate Holland and they managed to get the win. It wasnt really convincing but it wasnt undeserved either.

Today they go against the Czechs who, while not as talented or stacked as the Portuguese team, nor having a guy like Ronaldo (Baros doesnt count, bring back Koller or Poborsky) they are better organized than the Danes or Dutch and I expect them to be the defensively toughest team Portugal has faced since Germany.

That said, what I expect to see here is the Czechs defending while the Portuguese attack and then the Czechs will look to hit them on the counter. What makes the engagement even more interesting is the fact that the Czechs' strength lies on the same side as the Portuguese's weakness, but the same could be said both ways.

The Czechs love to attack down their right, and collect attack minded players on that side while the Portuguese love to attack down their left and have been playing Ronaldo and Coentrao on that flank.

Its going to be interesting.

Cam, England beat Spain on penalties in 1996 and Italy don't have a wonderful spot kick record either. Hart is a good shot stopper though he is no David Seaman. They've got a chance.
