Don't get me wrong, I'm not at all unhappy England has gone through (as a long suffering Dutchman, I can identify with what the English go through) but seriously, how was that not called a goal?

You have a linesman standing right there who's sole purpose is to stare intently at that goal line all game and watch for exactly what transpired today, and he still missed it.

If this doesn't soundly prove that it's time for the dinosaurs running EUFA and FIFA to pull their collective heads out of their arses and go to video replay in instances like this, I don't know what will. Ridiculous.

If there was video replay it would also show the Ukarainian being a yard offside. So no goal either way.
Plus it was really close like maybe an inch or two over before Terry cleared it. It would be really hard to call that in a fraction of a second. Not like the England goal in 2010, that was a good two feet over. I have no idea how they blew that one. So maybe they should get video replay.

Good point, forgot about that, he was off-side, wasn't he. However, if they brought in video replay, I feel it should only be for goal line decisions, otherwise, where do you stop with it.

Judging whether the ball has crossed the goal line when it is in the air can be - as Flames fans know - rather difficult. I thought that the ball had crossed the line when I first saw it, whereas my neighbour did not. In all likelihood it was in, but sadly, football's governing bodies are reticent in contemplating goal-line technology. This only strengthens the argument for.

I wonder if we'd be saying the same thing is there were multiple teams that were being covered by the English language press. Pretty easy to be over-discussed in an English speaking country when the vast majority of other teams are covered predominantly in other languages. We see articles from all the English press, how many do we see from the German or Italian press? Heck, the Swedish daily sports paper had a 2 page spread of time lapse photos of their manager spiking a water bottle.

Really? Where is this? Sounds cool.

TSN showed a replay after the game, and enlarged the picture. It was unquestionably in - 100% certainty.

Read about it in a Deadspin article

A stand near the pedestrian bridge that connects the island to the mainland sells water, beer, and ice cream, and offers free copies of Sport-Expressen, a full-color Swedish paper that examines the country's sporting news in remarkable detail. (The day after Sweden lost to England pages 12 and 13 featured a four-frame action shot of manager Erik Hamren spiking a water bottle to the ground.)

I haven't seen the pictures, but it does indeed sound cool.

Where super Nik went wrong.

Quote:
After Denmark striker Niklas Bendtner was fined €100,000 by UEFA for exposing sponsored underwear during a goal celebration against Portugal, UEFA have confirmed that it would have been less if his pants had just featured a racist message.

With Portuguese club Porto only receiving a €20,000 fine from UEFA for racist conduct by their supporters, Niklas Bendtner’s pants have highlighted that UEFA’s main priority is ensuring that advertisers pay vast amounts of money – not that people can participate in or attend sporting events without being subjected to racism.

“Niklas Bendtner’s underpants featured the logo of a well known bookmakers,” explained a UEFA spokesperson.

“We have a zero tolerance policy on company logos appearing during matches when we don’t receive enormous amounts of money for them to appear.”

“If Bendtner’s pants had featured a swastika or if his celebration had been a tribute to The Goodies 1975 hit The Funky Gibbon, then we would have been more lenient, because that wouldn’t cost us any money.”

Bendtner, who spent last season on loan at Sunderland from Arsenal, expressed his surprise at the severity of the punishment.

“I’m a little shocked to be honest – when I heard the fine I thought I must have accidentally played in my golliwog underpants.”

“But as the UEFA officials explained to me, they’ll get onto eliminating racism in football as soon as they deal with the real scourge of the modern game – ambush marketing.”

Fake news or not fake news I'm going to take UEFA's side on this.

I know it's easy to look at the fines and laugh about how "UEFA cares more about sponsorship than racism," but I don't think it is that simple.

If UEFA tripled the fines against various countries' FAs for their fans' racist actions, would it really make any difference? It's not the FAs doing the racist chanting. And how much extra money do these FAs have?

But the fine against a player for f-ing up sponsorship contracts is likely to actually have an effect. And the fine has to be bigger because the money being paid by the ambush marketer is more. I don't know how much Bendtner was paid to publicize the other company's logo, but that company paid his fine for him. So he still came out ahead, as did the company.

In the end money talks. Whether there are racist fans in the stands or not doesn't effect whether the event exists or if there is a worldwide tv audience or not. Advertising and marketing does. Most of us old enough in Canada remember where there was hardly any World Cup or Euro soccer on tv and if there was, the commentator sounded like he was on the moon.

If they don't have enough money it makes it imperative they find solutions as quickly as possible. Also, the English FA didn't kill people at Hillsborough...
