Rundown of the accident that caused the midair explosion of a B-1 Bomber last year.

Totally stealing this from Twitter without saying who tweeted it, but apparently tomorrow WS is going have Atlas Air flying a 747 YYZ to YYC to help clear the backlog of passengers.

Some neat aviation history, JFK got really mad when Pan Am announced they were going to buy Concorde:

Haha, I remember watching a documentary on the 747, which was iniitally just going to be a stop gap until Boeing unveiled this beauty to compete against Concorde:

Suffice to say, it never got built

How often do 747s come to Calgary? I know that it is rare enough to be a little bit of an event, but I'm not sure how rare.

So when a plane like this is leased, I assume that the pilots are included in the deal? And then Westjet will staff it with their own flight attendants? Will this thing pull up at the regular Westjet spots on D-wing, or will it have to park where the bigger, Air Canada flights usually do (at the end of B, I believe)?

An interesting strategy when you've got a bunch of passengers stuck somewhere, and a bunch of smaller planes that are probably all tied up on the rest of the network.

747's are not too rare at YYC anymore, we get 2 to 3 flights with Cargolux most weeks. Atlas was also in here a lot this past summer with the freighter 747 operating flights for the British Army.

I'm guessing in this situation the entire crew on the 747 is from Atlas, WestJet doesn't have any flight or cabin crew that would be certified to operate the flight.

I'm also assuming that they will park at D pier if there is space when it is scheduled to arrive.

WestJet needed to do this, they are already operating a whole bunch of extra flights to try and catch up with the backlog in YYZ (and throughout their network as a result), but it is not enough. This 747 has 474 seats and lots of room for cargo in the belly to help them get caught up. Air Canada with their wide body fleet has the luxury of just scheduling a larger plane on some routes to catch up, like this morning one of the YYZ-YYC flights was operated with one of the 777-300's.

Nobody has slapped a WestJet sticker on there yet? C'mon, not even a little one?

"WestJet 3017 heavy" is her callsign... clearly I underestimated the extent of this agreement if it has WestJet callsign?!

They're going to gate 47... the high D gates are pretty much the only place they could go.

Cessna Caravan crash in Hawaii caught on tape, unfortunately one person did die in this crash:

For those wondering, that squeeling sound before impact is the stall warning horn.

Any word anywhere on what killed the one person? From the video, it's doesn't appear that there was any super violet jerking, and there was plenty of time to get out of the plane. It seems like everyone should have survived that.

I am always amazed at how overly dramatic the American news is. "Plane spiraling out of control", "water comes rushing into the plane".

The plane didn't seem to be spiraling at all, nor did that water seem to come rushing into the plane. I guess it just makes for good TV to make things up.

Any idea who unloaded her? I assume a contracted service company as I cant imagine Westjet owns any can loaders.

Anyone know the seating configuration of the 747, its 474 seats but I was wondering if any lucky passengers got a biz class seat?

I found this, not sure if it's the configuration that was used for the 3017 route

Only 189 seats, no way it was that one. WestJet themselves made reference to getting 450 passengers and 1100 bags on the flight.
