My GP renews a prescription for my regular sleep medication when I ask but will only do it for one plus one renewal. I believe his clinic wants to create more billings; I don’t like that but that’s who they are. My prescribing pharmacist will add one or two renewals when I ask but then will send me back to the doctor.

I don’t remember that but I do know I’ve seen that movie, so it’s probably where I got the idea from.

Welcome to every doctor in the country. I’ve been taking pantaloc since I was 16 and can’t get a doctor to write me a scrip longer than 100 days.
Thank Christ my pharmacist can now renew without my doctor’s input. I think they fax his office but I get the pills whether he signs off or not.

Ah, maybe that's the difference. My GP is under alternate billing where they don't bill per service.

I believe part of that restriction is due to insurance, they won't pay for more than 100 days or something per refill. If you try to get a refill at, say, 50 days, insurance says FU peon. Come back later. But you shouldn't have to go to a doctor every hundred days, because you should get I think 3 or 4 refills per renewal.

Also Doctor Liability. You need to make sure you see the patient every once in awhile to make sure there are no serious side effects and/or on the right treatment.

The limit on pills per script is for the pharmacy. But that shouldn’t affect my doctor.
Although prescriptions do expire here. It’s much longer though. A year or more I think. So they can’t just write you an indefinite refill. ####ing stupid though. I’m not getting painkillers or anything remotely dangerous. Just give me the goddamn pills.

all this talk about Docs and prescriptions and pharmacies... the common issue is they still FAX stuff back and forth. About the only place I know of that actively uses Fax machines. They don't "trust" emails?? WTF.
Even 10+ years ago I used to see wild info come across the office fax machine - everything from incorrectly faxed stuff, to legal/divorce, tons of medical stuff, investments and net worth, and trips, and advertising for 1-900 #'s too.
What's the wildest ya'll seen on the fax machine?

Dont. Even. Start with me on this.
I am one of those fools that still has a fax machine. And why? Because I correspond with the Government.
When one has to submit supplemental documentation to the Government you have 3 options.
1. Mail. <- No. I'm not kidding. Its also the most reliable.
2. Direct Electronic Submission. This is about as effective as using a carrier Pigeon. You press that 'submit' button and your documents could end up in Surrey, Winnipeg, Ottawa or St. Johns or all broken down to all of them. It shouldnt matter as they are digital but oh boy it does.
Least reliable.
3. Fax. Second most reliable.
Someone needs to drag our Government into the Modern Era, by the nose, kicking and screaming if need be.

It’s because of privacy regulations. If you email something it needs to have one email with an encrypted file with the information then a second email with the encryption key. Email by its nature is not secure.
Also, “faxing” is not like it used to be. You pdf the file and send a secure “fax” through a Telus portal.

I've been trying to do more cardio lately, but it's just too hot to get outside today, so I downloaded a cardio on youtube. It was okay, it's definitely a lot more high intensity than I'm used to because you're doing in 10 or 20 minutes what a walk would take you, you know 2 hours. So at some point this lunatic wants me to do mountain climbers, and between my car accident and football my knees are just no condition to handle that. So I just ran around the basement while he did the mountain climbers on the TV

NM . Basically the same OoO message Weitz posted about. I've used it a bunch in the last few years and it works great.

The beauty of it is people figure their #### out before you get back and thus limit all the BS waiting for you.

See I still don't get the privacy statement... because a Fax could go anywhere and you don't know (as per my original post), but an email has very limited receipt points and arguably could also have some type of encryption that does not require a 2nd email right?

All this talk of prescription renewals made me remember my greatest discovery in the past few months. Rocket doctor. They do a virtual appointment with you, entirely covered by AHC and will just send the prescription to the pharmacy. Super convenient, and I can't recommend them enough.

What does your regular doctor feel about sidestepping him/her?

No idea. But the thing is, for a routine prescription renewal I'd have to book an appointment a few weeks out, go sit in the waiting room, and the whole song and dance. With Rocket Doctor, it's an easy setup, Zoom/Teams appointment and I get the prescription. You can basically get sameday service. And for people in rural areas (I'm not, but you know the person who put me on this), it's a massive time saver.

That's kind of hilariously sad. So our government system incentivizes doctors to inconvenience patients like this for no good reason, and another system that also bills AHS shows up to fix that. I don't know all the risks to personal health this brings(no issue for simple prescriptions) but it sure is silly it even needs to exist.

Well you still have an appointment with a doctor. The prescription I needed to renew was hardly life-threatening, so it's basically a formality. I know that doctors need to monitor these and there are reasons for the appointment, but it's also incredibly inconvenient to have an appointment where the outcome is virtually predetermined. The virtual appointment is perfect for that. They do other things though (just like any other doctors office), and the prescription renewal was just my use.
I don't think it's a bad addition to the healthcare system. It makes things easier for patients and helps reduce the load on the offices. It's costing the same amount of money for the system at the end of the day.
