Overhead at the bar I was watching the match at over lunch: "The British guy looks like Phil Kessel". And yeah he kinda does lol.

Bit anticlimactic, but given how those last three games went, easy to see why ESPN expects Edmund to retire.

I just got to the pub to watch!
I'm torn. I want Dennis to advance, but I also want to watch him play. Do I cheer for the retirement or for him to have to win 3 sets?

Yeah, Edmund is done, he can barely move. That's too bad, it was a very entertaining match to watch. That said, way to go Denis.

Sucks to arrive just as it ends, but for Shapovalov, this is good. He's not used to playing best of five set matches, so conserving energy early helps late.

I couldn't hear the interview, can you give a recap?
I'm glad he'll get some rest

“It’s never nice to win that way,” says Denis Shapovalov as Kyle Edmund wanders off court. “I thought I had a lot of chances in the first set. I had chances to break back. It just wasn’t clicking together. I knew I had to stay aggressive. I knew my chances would come and luckily they did in the second.”
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/li...ird-round-live
Yet the draw has opened up to such an inviting extent that eventually someone’s going to rise above the turbulence and discover the clarity, composure and confidence to soothe a sport reeling from the dimming of so many of its leading lights. It could be Denis Shapovalov, the exciting 18-year-old Canadian who’s having quite a time of it in 2017.
This defeat for Kyle Edmund means that there are no British players left in this US Open. It’s a worrying glimpse of what life might be like without Andy Murray. As for the extravagantly talented Denis Shapovalov, the Canadian is through to the fourth round for the first time in his short career and he will face Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta next. The bottom half of the men’s draw is so open. Not one player has reached a grand slam final. Astonishing. Only Sam Querrey has reached a grand slam semi-final. It’s a wonderful opportunity for someone.

If nothing else he's the crowd favorite from the bottom half. Would still be stunned if he made the final, but it is certainly a realistic possibility

Didn't like to win that way but glad to be in the 4th round
Gilbert: So many people in your box but where are your parents?
Dad is somewhere, back in a couple days
Mom is loyal to tennis club so is back home
Gilbert: i think it would just take one phone call for them to be here.
how do you pronounce your name?

If you guys are watching tennis all day long you should really bet on matches when a guy/girl starts labouring. Made some pretty good money on the final few games of Shapovalov's match.

except, bets are void when a player retires.

I liked when he said it was easier if you "treated it like two syllables"; Chapeau-VAHlov. I'm sure his high school English teacher rolled their eyes at that. lol

I can't speak for his father, but his mom runs a club and Denis said she's focused on transitioning the kids from summer to fall programs. He seems pretty proud of her. She was a mainstay in his box in Montreal.
Martin Laurendeau has basically been another parent for Denis over the past five years. His presence is constant.

Not if you are betting in game. Like betting Denis to break him his last 2 service games and Denis to hold his serve game at love.
