I think Backlund and Frolik are great. Also, I think that they will hold back Tkachuk's production...since both are secondary scoring-type forwards.
Gaudreau-Monahan-Tkachuk
Chucky puts up 25 goals 40 assists 65 points. Book it.

Did anyone catch this yesterday? There is some speculation that a Draisaitl extension is near completion.

Leon Draisaitl is not worth a cent more than Monahan. So overrated.

Shhhhhh....if the oilers scouting staff sees this they might reconsider an 8x8M...

8X$8m is not decent at all, a cent over $7m is bad.
This was likely leaked the way McDavid's was.
He'll sign for $7.5 and the kool-aid fans will claim he took a discount for the team

That would make him (tied for) the 15th highest paid player (not on an ELC) in the NHL... I don't think Draisaitl is the 15th best player in the NHL.

While I agree $8 million is too much, going off pay isn't the best indicator unless you can somehow account for inflation.
I would like a 6 or 7 year 6.5 - 7 million deal personally.

This seems to be the difference in the approach the Flames have vs the Oilers
Flames management is going for lower cap hits for 5-7 year terms
Oilers are going with higher cap hits but for 7-8 years
To me the Treliving is out performing Chiarelli in terms of cap management. Gaudreau and Monahan at 13 mil vs Mcdavid and Drasaitl at 20.5 mil for the next 5 years gives the Flames a huge advantage
Throw in a guy like Hamilton at 5.75 for 4 more years I just don't see how the Oilers can get better than last season for at least 3 years. Factor in consistently you read that the Flames prospect depth is much better than the Oilers. I really think the only chance the Oilers have is if McDavid improves a lot more or Puljujarvi is a star. I personally think McDavid is already almost as good as he is going to be. If Jesse Puljujarvi is a quality 2nd liner at best they are going to be middle of the pack for a few years and if they don't start to draft better than they have in the last 10 years(outside first overall pick) they will continue to be middle of the pack

Did you know Gaudreau-Monahan-Hudler was one of the best lines in the NHL in 14-15 season?
Do you know what happened to them in 15-16 season?

Why settle for two amazing lines when we might have the possibility of constructing three amazing lines?

Leon is absolutely worth a more, a lot more.
Lets be realistic and logical.
I mean, he literally exploded from being a inconsistant 50 point player to playing with the god of hockey himself and exploding for 77 points on the wing.
In the second round of the playoffs, when the Ducks were punching the Oilers lights out, Leon and Talbot were the only Oilers that showed a heart beat.
Look at that face, that's the look of a man that's about to conquer France. I mean for real, how can you not build your season ticket campaign around him.
I would think at minimum with a home town discount he's worth 9 million bucks a year or more. I mean who's Ryan Johanson.
I mean look at the face that 8.
I mean come on, he looks like the guy that sweeps up the mall and asks the teenagers where the cool parties are at this weekend.
I mean look at this guy,
Connor demands that his fellow knockwurst brother from a different mother gets paid.
10 million

Meh, I don't see that being a problem. But if you want some lines that don't include Bennett-Brouwer how about
Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Tkachuk-Bennett-Versteeg/Foo
Frolik-Backlund-Brouwer

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Jankowski - Backlund - Tkachuk
Versteeg - Bennett - Frolik
Stajan - Lazar - Brouwer
Hathaway
Self-explanatory first line. Great second half to the season, and were good in playoffs, I don't care what the scoreboard said.
Backlund and Tkachuk had supreme chemistry together, no sense in breaking them up. Tkachuk also has experience playing RW in London. Jankowski would fit in that line like a glove. Him and Tkachuk would be terrors on the cycle, and he's a big man that can skate and has great offensive and defensive instincts.
Versteeg/Bennett were also really good together, adding Frolik to that line gives them a huge boost defensively, and also gives Bennett another player that can help him put the puck in the net.
Fourth line is what it is. Seen a lot of quotes of how Lazar projects as a center, gets mentored by one of the classiest and hardworking bottom sixers in the game. Brouwer, regardless of the horrific season, can still put the puck in the net and is a decent passer. Gives us four lines that can chip in, and are all solid defensively.
No more stonehand Bouma or Bollig types in the lineup for this team.

Ahh yeah... Like Bennett worked out last season playing on that line, or like how well it worked when Johnny and Monny were broken up.. or yada yada..
Proven over Magic Beans everyday of the week. It also allowed Backlund to have a career year and Frolik elevated his game with the chipiness Tkachuk created as well.
Backlund has also always tried to play with the edge Chucky does and ended up getting hurt and IMO backed off from that type of game until Chucky arrived. It seemed to have helped Back's elevate his game.
But yeah, lets blow that up because theres a chance Tkachuk can get 20 more points a season with Monny and Johnny.
I LOL at you guys.

Change McDickbutt to Gaudreau or Monahan and Puljujarvi to Bennett (and 1st overall pick to 1st round pick lol) and this would apply just as well to the Flames.
I don't really know what I'm getting at but some players need to take some steps if the Flames are to compete. I think it's about as likely for either teams' question marks to pan out.
