losing to a German team who were 2nd favorites coming in, England were 7th I believe, would definitely be a choke

I can't remember the last time Italy played England at a major tournament to be honest.
It's really rare...

They have never met in a World Cup, unless you count the 3rd place match in World Cup 1990. Italy won 2-1. Personaly I don't consider 3rd place games as real games.

They met once at the Euros in the group stage in 1980 also in Italy. Italy won 1-0.

That's it!

Edit: England beat Italy 2-0 at Le Tournoi. Does that count!?

By who? The English press, who pretty much live to build things up and then break them down when they fail to live up to the absurd hype? The laughable FIFA rankings? Nobody who actually knows anything about the game thinks England is all that great, certainly not to a level where they could be accused of being overrated.

it's really too bad that after such a great start to the tourney ukraine and croatia are out. ukraine was a longshot but croatia has the quality and passion to do better. sad

Yeah no way England "chokes" in this tournament. There would be no shame in losing to Italy or Germany.

Winning their group without having their best player for two games should probably already be seen as a success for England.

England has done exactly what they set out to do, they qualified for the knockout stage. Winning the group is a bonus.

Most realistic expectations seem to be that this is job done, if they manage to beat Italy and continue on then so much the better.

Was I missing something? I tuned out after 80 minutes, but I don't remember Gerrard missing a single pass.

If you want to see the definition of the word 'choke' then look at Holland and Russia.

I think the correct term is most over-discussed team in the world.

At this point I'd love to see a Portugal Spain and Italy Germany semis.

Obvious rivalry in one and a rematch of the oh so epic 2006 WC semi.

it's not as though I meant to criticize him too much, I think he has been England's best so far, it's that too many times he goes for the 40 yard pass when a 10 yard pass will do

Some people might accuse me of being biased but not only has Gerrard been England's best player I would argue that he has been one of the most influential players in the entire tournament. The man is on a mission.
