Seriously this is amusing reactions. If your reaction is manager sucks when player underperforms that’s not much of a feedback. I don’t see anything wrong with the process here. I also am not a fan of putting in Romano in that situation since he is not the best with runners on and even at best of times he’s hardly the best at limiting walks. The only thing wrong Montoyo did this week was the Espinal bunt. Of course that game Jays had multiple chances to win it but couldn’t produce. Also not on him. This team is mostly young and they’re still going through learning pains.

What is the process here? Losing games that they should've won?
If the only thing Montoyo has done wrong is asking a batter to bunt with 2 strikes what is it that he has done right?
I know I'm a huge detractor of Montoyo and probably unfairly place the blame at his feet sometimes but I do wonder what he is doing to put his team in the best position to win.

To be fair though, Montoyo should have left Chatwood in to clean up his own mess. Much better option than bringing in Bergen IMO.

I am fine with Montoyo. The bunting bugs me but there is too much made about baseball managers. Bobby Cox is likely one of the greatest of all time and even then he was worth about 3 WAR. I guess in a game as random as baseball where there is such little control over outcomes that to think a manager has such a tremendous impact on the outcome of multiple games is, in my opinion, wrong.

That was my thinking too. He has been the most consistent of the relievers who are still healthy and he gets the quick yank at the first sign of trouble. With 2 outs too.

That 4 pitch walk to Diaz was pretty bad though. I get why he hooked him. Then Bergen was worse!

Is there anything more frustrating to watch in sports than seeing your team walk home the winning run?

I'm neutral on the decision to pull Chatwood. It was probably the wrong call. If you are a vet, and you make a mess, you clean it up or you eat the tough questions after the game.

I’m sure you all would have given Montoyo the benefit of the doubt if he left Chatwood in there. You would have crucified him for leaving in a player who wasn’t doing well.
As for what he did well I think he’s been good with bullpen decisions. In the game they blew to Boston he put Chatwood and Romano in the hugest leverage situations. Dolis then blew it. Here he put in Chatwood in the highest leverage and he blew it.
I judge Montoyo on stuff behind the scenes. Aka are the players progressing and developing and getting better. I don’t think it’s fair to judge him on results of good process. If you go to baseball reference and look who has been out in high leverage situations it is who should be in there. Given the injuries to the bullpen I think it’s as good as can be expected. Just seeing reversion to the mean after some early over performance. I don’t see Montoyo putting in say Payamps in this situation. On the game vs Boston he put in the best guy available and he lost. Here he put in best available and they lost again. At the end of the day it’s the players job to perform.

Yeah thing is that some of these relievers are still pretty unpredictable, especially lately.
Dolis can look like garbage one day then great the next. Chatwood has been great this year and then today he was terrible. It's just too bad so many in the bullpen have been hurt this season, especially Yates, would have been awesome to have that lock down closer come out in the 9th. Now you have to try to figure out the puzzle pieces for the last innings and hope for the best.

Yates, Merryweather and Phelps being hurt long term is a two fold stinger.
First, it makes the Jays have to trot out the same few guys in high leverage every single time, some of whom have been battling injuries themselves like Romano, Dolis and Borucki.
Plus, with the other injuries the Jays are putting guys like Bergen, Cole, Payamps, Thornton and Beasley in high leverage. That is going to cost you against teams like Boston and Tampa.

At the very least we've gotten a chance to see who has the cajones to pitch in the high leverage situations

This team has been pretty hard to watch the last week. It feels like we haven't won a game in a month to me for some reason.
So frustrating with all the injuries and constantly losing close games.

Better than being blown out. I could see in say a few weeks that our pitchers look like this:
Ryu
Ray
Matz
Manoah
Hatch
Then bullpen could be:
Romano
Chatwood
Borucki
Dolis
Castro
Stripling (his stuff would likely be better in relief since he does have good K rates)
Thornton
Cole
Bergen
Merryweather close to return.
We’re doing pretty well all things considered. It is rough that our division is so insanely good.

Yes, watching them walk in the tying run, then the winning run, then an insurance run for good measure.

Thornton opens today, followed by Stripling. Hoping to be pleasantly surprised but I doubt the losing streak ends today.

Yup. I have more confidence in Thornton than Stripling.

I know Toronto broadcasters across all sports never want to come across as homers and unprofessional, but I really wish the pbp guys in baseball and basketball called out the umps and refs over terrible calls. They’re so passive, like they’re dying to be liked, that it drives me nuts.
