He basically said that Hartley and the Flames don't think Hiller is or is going to be the solution for a #1. If they think they can upgrade on him they will.

FWIW Molberg was also speculating on whether the Flames and Canes look at Cam Ward the other day.

Bleh, not a fan of Ward. Having an off year or two, might be explainable; but he hasn't been near the same level since they won the cup almost a decade ago now. Would he be even worth taking a flyer on if Treliving could get the hapless Canes to add?

Can he be that much worse in CGY than Ramo or Hiller? My only thought on Ward and the Canes is that organization as a whole got stagnant since their cup run. everything they've tried to do since then has only kept them afloat.

Ward: .910 sv% 2.40 gaa on a bad canes team and 51 starts.

Hiller: .918 sv% 2.36 gaa. in 52 starts

Ramo: .912 sv% 2.60 gaa. on 34 starts

If age is you thing, Ward is only 30 vs Hillers who is 33 and Ramo who is 28. So I suppose it kind of balances itself out.

And cap hit: The Flames can easily eat Wards 6.3 cap hit for the lone season he will be under contract. And if I am not mistaken, the Canes want to clear cap even though they are floating in the bottom half of the league. So potentially a Hiller for Ward swap would be a favorable move for the Canes.

Wideman has 2 years left on his contract. I don't see the Flames trading him until they have a replacement.

Next year's deadline maybe?

There was that Ward rumor last year that the Flames would take him plus something in return for taking the cap hit.

EDIT: I was going to say something something 2nd round picks but if there is interest from the Flames on Ward, a trade will happen. Seems like the foundation would be set.

Has Ward regressed that much? Honest question, haven't followed him too close lately. I know the contract isn't great but surely he, himself isn't pure garbage. Cam Ward could potentially be quite good unless I'm missing something.

Kind of surprising to read that comment from Freidman.......but then when you think about it more, maybe not that surprising.

The Flames goalies weren't terrible, but they weren't fantastic either. I could see management looking for an upgrade I guess.

Ward bounced back this year and wasn't bad. His Sv% was only 0.008 lower and his GAA was 0.04 higher than Hiller's.

Marginally worse stats but on a terribad team. Would likely be a decent upgrade.

Hiller is not the best stop gap and switch it up and go with Ward who has had some good years in the past.

What about a Crawford for Hiller swap? Not sure if one team would have to add or not, given the Hawks cap issues.

Do we feel like Crawford is the real deal, or is he just an ok goalie backstopping an unreal possession team?

Would give the Hawks $1.5 million cap space next year, and $6.0 million the year after when Hillers deal expires, plus they get a more proven starter next year to help shoulder the load while they try to get a better look at Raanta/Darling.

I said it near November but the Flames should have straight up swapped 1sts with a team like Toronto or Philly.

No one expected the Flames to make it out of the bottom 5 so it would have looked like steal for those other teams.

Would have been sweet.

I think Crawford is indeed a product of his team. I'm hoping the Oil overpay to get him and then he'll get exposed for an average-at-best tender.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Hawks just wanted to move Niem.... I mean Crawford for a D-man to replace Oduya, which both the Oilers and Sabres have.

A Klefbom for Crawford trade would make some sense.
