A new way to predict the playoffs?
Unless you are Aaron Ward, it previously was difficult to predict who might make the NHL playoffs. Well, not any more. An advanced analytic, goal differential, is apparently incredibly predictive. This new model is not likely to gain any acceptance because:
1. It is not named after anyone
2. Everyone knows that simply throwing pucks at the net is a far better predictor than actually putting those pucks in the net.
More as this story continues to break.

Sort of funny that should the Sharks win on Saturday, this year will go down as it only requiring 94/93 points to make the playoffs in the West all of a sudden...

I know, I Know a total what if:
However, if the flames had gone through the 8 game losing streak at their 74game average (82-8) they would have had 107 points, even if we assume a loss coming up.
Flames have 97 points in 82 games (assuming gloss to Peg) - Omitting the 8 game losing streak, that's 97 points in 74 or 97/148 points or .655.
.655*82*2= 107

Sigh...
The Flames' goal differential last year was -32. Had you used goal differential to predict the playoffs this season, you would have been totally wrong.

The Flames had a substantially different roster last year. Had you used any team's stats to predict the performance of a different set of players, you could count on being wrong there too.
Now try looking at *this* season's goal differential – say, at the 60-game mark, when you were confidently predicting (based on Fenwick and Corsi) that the Flames would fall apart and miss the playoffs. Then extrapolate over the remaining games of the season, compare with the actual results, and tell me what you find.

I will second that on Jets4life, great thread! It is interesting to see which teams were behind and pulled ahead (the Wild) and vice-versa.
