I explained how elections work to my 7 year old son after we saw a bunch of campaign signs for the mayor's race. Now he is constantly asking me to run for mayor.

If all of CP voted for you, you might make top 10

If I thought I could get all of CP to do something, I'd enter one of those social media voting contests and get a free BBQ or appliance package or something else more useful than a mid-pack finish in the mayoral race
I have never understood the motivation of people who run but have no chance of winning. (Which would absolutely include me due to my lack of fame, relevant experience, connections, and fundraising ability)

I wonder how it would look on a resume? Or would running for mayor develop any skills? Running a campaign, public speaking, etc...., especially if you're on the marketing, communications field?
I mean, there are 40+ candidates running for Governor in California in an election that might not even happen, only activates if the recall vote wins.
Does the person who will finish 24th even do any of these skill-building things? Or it is all for show and crazyness?

I have to think you have an overly inflated sense of self-worth, bordering on arrogance to run for mayor of a major municipality like Calgary when you have no chance of winning. I mean, I don’t think they’re deluded into thinking they might win (although surely some are), but if you really wanted to effect change in the community then run for a councillor position instead. To me, running for mayor is just so you can say you ran for mayor, see your face on road signs, and get to check off your own name on the ballot.
Can you imagine if random realtor or business guy or girl somehow managed to win enough votes somehow? Do they actually think they would be able to lead a city of 1.6 million people, a council of 15 members, and a budget in the billions?

Look at Nenshi's rise, he tried to run for Council in '04 and failed, then said "F-ck it, I'll try for Mayor this time". The seemingly out of nowhere candidate beat an incumbent councillor in Ric McIvor and a well-known local news anchor in Barb Higgins.
I mean, someone has to win, so you might as well try... but that's the catch, you have to put the work in, and I feel like the bulk of the mayoral candidates this time around are phoning it in. Nenshi's mayoral bid was a clinic in how to run a successful campaign.

At least Nenshi had an academic background in terms of building cities and the like. And it’s funny (?) because the person he lost to 2004 was apparently one of the worst councillors we’ve had in awhile.

Ah, fair enough. But I’d like to think Ralph could squat at least 300 in his younger days.

The Sprawl has an article detailing candidates.
https://www.sprawlalberta.com/candid...-election-2021
Quote:
The next civic election is on October 18, 2021. So we’re keeping a master list of all the candidates who have declared they’re running for Calgary city council, along with Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic School District trustees.
Official nominations close September 20, 2021 at noon. (Note that current councillors who are running for mayor are free to change their minds before that date and run for councillor in their wards, if they choose to.)
The list is up to date as of August 28. If we’re missing anyone, or if there are any errors, let our municipal politics reporter Jeremy Appel know at jeremy.appel@sprawlalberta.com.

Helene Larouque? Yeah, all the community associations hated her, because she didn’t do anything.
When she ran for re-election in 2007, she was 3rd out of 3. Current councillor George Chahal was second.
She ran again in 2010 but lost again.

Interesting. Had no idea Chahal finished (a close) second to Stevenson back in 2010. I guess losing is Ward 3 is the key to advancing in politics (well, unless you're Helene Larocque).

I generally drive faster than the speed limit, and have never gotten a photo radar ticket. I use the following heuristic when I see vehicles parked by the road. "Is this vehicle late model enough that someone would be happy if they bought it with someone else's money"
If its older than a few years it isn't a photo radar vehicle.
