Years ago a coworker challenged his assessment because of what a similar sized home in his neighborhood sold for. He got a lot knocked off his assessment and saved on his taxes.

City didn’t realize the house that sold was a grow-op.

Down side, you need to have grow-ops in your neighborhood for that to work.

Off the kids in their Escalades. I have been tempted to go to the school amd beat the fatass mom with the kid at times. Never pick them up on time.

I Tell the wife to just leave when the day is over…..But I can’t. Ya the fata you can, little Meygunn can sit out in the cold and you lose your barely minimum wage job. Oh noes.

Shocked more teachers don’t snap and kick more kids in the face. I’d pay money for that satisfaction.

Wow. Day drinking?

Isn't that why a lot of places have super punishing fees for every minute after pickup time? Sounds like they have money. Take it.

That has been the policy at a bunch of daycares since the early 2000s. It was like $5 a minute or something if you picked them up after 6pm.

My taxes are going up a whopping $277.38 after a $84,500 assessment increase.

The assessment is still at least $150,000 short of what our property would likely sell for, but that's the benefit of living in a newer construction and community as the city will take longer to figure things out.

I just pulled a few very recent sales in various communities to compare to their 2025 assessments (Beltline, Braeside, Evanston, Saddle Ridge) to show just how all over the map the assessments can be from their actual current market values even within the same community:

Spoiler!

Typically the city under-assesses.

I find if you sold under your assessment it means either your basement reno sucks, the place smells like urine/curry/smoke or you really need to get out of your mortgage.

I would estimate our house assessment is probably 50-60k below what it could sell for, potentially more if the right conditions hit

I would freakin love to see the formula that gives the assessment value. I'll bet it has upwards of 30 variables, half of which are just guesses someone made 20+ years ago when market-value assessment started.

And it's probably a copyrighted formula that the city's paying millions to license.

They don't tell you the formula, but they do tell you the variables here:

Andrew Knack Edmonton councillor had a really good explanation of how assessment works on his Facebook page. I don’t know if it’s on his webpage but it’s worth reading.

Shaw / Rogers / Shawgers Current TV Line up.

My god did they ever make it worse.

For the first time ever I am considering cutting the cord.

Is it just a bad time for TV shows or have they just decided to run repeats forever ?

It’s been years. I regret most every decision I’ve ever made. Not that one. Only regret is when you cancel you can’t finish on their face.

Most daycares charge like $1 a minute for being late. Staff should be getting a cut of that.

Thanks for the link. The theory is clear enough, but i really want to know the variables underlying "quality" and "influences," and how they factor them all together. "Influences" isn't a variable. "View" is not quantifiable. How do they actually turn the subjective factors into input?

The fact that the actual process is explained only in general terms, combined with the fact that there are 100s of thousands of properties in Calgary alone, means there's 100% a computer model that the people who use it don't understand. And that model definitely has factors and multipliers built into it that were invented by some grad student in 1996 that have no basis in reality.

"Trust us, it's accurate. Want to complain? Pay us and we'll maybe override the model this year."

Outside of HBO I can't think of a new tv show that is compelling enough to be worthy of investing time, energy and money into watching over the last 10 years. The streaming services are putting out better original content than any tv network.

And all of it is available, legally and without the monthly payments of any streaming services or tv bills.

We havent had TV in our house for 5 years now, and with a VPN, a $350 mini pc and the knowledge of a few websites we have access to every tv show (1 hour after airing finishes), every sport live streamed and every PPV event. The only sport I struggled to find was the world juniors until this year, now I’m good.
