Well it certainly appears that the unscheduled practice and any other discussions he had with the players pushed the right buttons. Really though if this is what it takes then it's something he needs to do more often than leaving it for when they are mired in a slump. Time for him to start cracking the whip on a regular basis as I feel this group needs to be pushed on harder. Gulutzan needs to find that happy medium where he's still player friendly but firm. I realize there's a group of players (the ones that complained to the GM that Hartley was too hard on them) on this team that don't like to be pushed hard but it's what they need.

Gulutzan's actions the last two days have been those of someone who knows he could very well be unemployed for Christmas. It's how he should have behaved 15 months ago.

Which actions? He should have been bag skating the team and hosting practices during off days 15 months ago? I’m not sure what you mean.

All you needed to do was read exactly one post up. Or do I have to quote literally the post right before me before context comes clear?

while it's hard to find anyone who would say Chia > Treliving, but had a recent chat with the resident greaser fan at work today...
is Gluegun > McLellan?

What if the Oilers were to fire McClellan in the next 5 games... would it be worth our while to fire GG and pick up McClellan?

McClellan is a proven failure

GG has not proven to be either good or bad yet

Lets not confuse the hardships of being on a guaranteed million dollar contract - with folks out there who really do sweat this possibility.

For a guy who has a non-playoff team barely 2 years ago playing with the best of them and squarely in the playoff race, there are a lot of negative opinions here.

I haven't been a big Gulutzan supporter of late, but it was nice to see him win that challenge on that goal in Montreal.

Is McLellan a proven coach? He took over a really strong SJ team, and was never able to win with them. That group is looked upon as a perennial Stanley cup disappointment. SJ missed the playoffs the last year he was there, and the following season under DeBoer, they make it to the Stanley Cup finals.

He did have Edmonton playing well last year - much better, in fact. However, this year they have reverted to themselves.

I am not sure if he is an upgrade on Gulutzan. He is without a doubt more experienced, but I am not sure he is really any better. At any rate, if the Flames for some reason let Gulutzan go, I would hope it is to hire a better coach than McLellan. McLellan is just not one of those coaches that make teams think they should replace their existing coaches for. I don't see it.

Exactly. If he's fired this soon after taking over the Oilers, it's because he's not effective. I don't know what about his body of work over the last several years is all that appealing. The grass is always greener, but also comes with warts of its own

I feel McLellan is a strong 2nd tier coach and I think the telling factor is that if both coaches got their walking papers at the end of the season that McLellan would get a new head coach job long before Gulutzan who like every Flames head coach post Darryl will likely never coach again (as head coach) in the NHL after the Flames.

Three years ago this team had more points and went further into the playoffs at a much earlier stage of the rebuild than Gulutzans team last year and his projected finish this year. With a much deeper, more seasoned team backed by a better goaltender.
Besides, weren't you the guy saying the Flames had a plan and winning in the next two years wasn't part of it? As silly as that is, if true, what do you think their plan was 2 years ago when the team was on the inner cusp of a rebuild? The whole reason they brought in a new coach was to improve upon that team. This team was luck to make the playoffs last year and are in tough again this year. Thus far, Gulutzan has proven he's incapable of improving this team.

If McLellan’s “second-tier”, why does he get rinkside seats to every home game?

People romanticize the Hartley playoff year way too much. That team relied on miracle comebacks and the perfect first round matchup. That team had so many issues. Go look back at that roster. The Flames got absolutely dusted in the 2nd round and would have by any team they played that year

Don't disagree with your assessment of McLellan in general, but I think he would get another job because the NHL is an old boys club rather than based on merit.
This season is probably make or break for GG as a head coach, I agree.
