Before the 2012 baseball draft, Mississippi outfielder Anthony Alford was widely regarded as a first-round talent. But he was also a standout high-school quarterback who made it clear football was his priority.

The Toronto Blue Jays drafted the speedy Alford in the third round anyway, agreed to let him play both sports and signed him for US$750,000 in the hope that one day he would commit to baseball.

A few days ago, he did. After four games as a sophomore backup safety at the University of Mississippi, he called Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos and said he had decided to give up football.

“For the short time he was [in Lansing], the reports we were getting from the staff said they were pretty excited about him,” Anthopoulos said.

Staff reports compared Alford to Rondell White, who spent 15 years in the majors, the first eight with Montreal.

“I don’t want to raise expectations for him,” Anthopoulos said. “We’re just glad to have him. We think he’s an outstanding prospect. It’ll be interesting to see him for a full season now and see how he’ll progress.”

The future of general manager Alex Anthopoulos has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks. He overhauled the roster two years ago but the Blue Jays have gone 157-167 since and extended their playoff drought to 21 years with an 83-79 finish this past season.

"Alex I can say for a fact is back," Beeston said Friday in an interview on Sportsnet 590 The Fan.

Anthopoulos has been with the franchise for over a decade and has served as GM for the last five years.

"He hasn't finished what he started out to do," Beeston said. "I'm 100 per cent supportive of him. I think that he has done a very good job. I think we are now seeing the benefits of what happened with his development (and) his investment in the farm system.

"I think that's only going to be better for the future."

Beeston also said he expected manager John Gibbons to return next year. Anthopoulos has also voiced his confidence in the Blue Jays skipper, who has a rolling contract that kicks in every Jan. 1.

Time for Beeston to go. Made his living in Pat Gillick's shadow and is nothing more than a blower of dellusional PR sunshine these past few years. His hand shaking and baby kissing days as a big cheese strutting around Toronto from the 80's and early 90's are long gone and he's presiding over a team that hasn't made the playoffs tin 21 years, while every other MLB team has since then.

He's also the one who told the players there'd be money there at the deadline when some of the players offered to take a pay cut to get Santana. The emotional tailspin that it put the team into after the trade deadline speaks for itself in the team's record and fall out of the playoff picture for good.

The Blue Jays are in the market for a new hitting coach with Kevin Seitzer leaving for the Atlanta Braves after failing to reach a deal for a second season in Toronto.

The Blue Jays now have vacancies to fill at hitting and bullpen coach, after Bob Stanley was told recently that he’d be reassigned within the organization. The remainder of the coaching staff – bench coach DeMarlo Hale, pitching coach Pete Walker, first base coach Tim Leiper and third base coach Luis Rivera – are all under contract for 2015.

Jays claim Justin Smoak off waivers from Mariners... Interesting, and certainly fuels the Adam Lind trade possibilities floating around twitter. By no means am I say that Smoak is a suitable replacement for Lind, but a Lind trade does open up some opportunities to fill a hole elsewhere.

Smoak is such a tease with that power.

Almost 2K at bats now so he is a known quantity and he simply didn't live up to his draft potential.

It's low risk I suppose but trading Lind will create a new problem at 1B even if the thought is platooning Smoak.
