Is there a reason some of you are so high on Barzal? Don't know much about him but his numbers certainly don't wow anyone. What am I missing about this guy? His stats alone suggest he should fall way past 15th overall.
If he dropped out of the top 10 I'd be shocked. I think he could go as high as 6th. He's been highly touted for years being a former 1st overall Bantam draft pick. Had a great U-18 tournament as well. Had a knee injury this season and missed a lot of time. He has first line upside IMO.
He has Barzal falling to Boston at 14 and the Flames taking Colin White.
You can see which players Button is high on from that mock, i.e Konecny over Merkley
Also this leafs fan comment made me

His actual list would be the best way to see who he is high on.
He has Merkley ranked 11th in his ranking and Konecny ranked 33rd.
Also has Boeser ranked 9th but has him picked 26th in the mock.
I agree. He wouldn't be a terrible selection if the Flames were picking 22-25th, but would be boring at 15.
He might be a boring pick at 15, but he might not make it to 22-25 either.
A lot of the praise about Harkins from a few weeks ago could be applied to White. From Red Line's draft spotlight:
Not sure about his offensive upside, but it sounds like he could be a good #2 center. Of course if there are forwards with a higher ceiling still on the board, I'd prefer the Flames go that route. But White doesn't seem to be a total dud either, he's ranked right where the Flames are picking - nobody seems to be talking about him though.
If available at 15, i would love it if we took gurianov. I know there is the russian factor but a big scoring winger is exactly what we need. Everything i have read suggests he could be a star. If he had a good interview then i would be ecstatic with him at 15.

Sorry I should reword, not who Button personally is high on but his general consensus of players that may be more highly regard by teams compared to draft rankings put out by media and prospect websites

As far as forwards go, only three players projected in the top 15 really check off every box on the "everything Flames could use right now" list.
[] 5'11" or taller
[] Highly Creative Stickhandler
[] Good right-handed shot
[] Strong Skater
[] High hockey IQ / vision
[] Excellent possession-driver
[] High compete level
...Those three players are Jack Eichel, Mitchell Marner and Matthew Barzal. If we get Barzal, this is a highly successful draft from a team need perspective while still running away with probably the BPA. It'd be a perfect first round.
Some of the guys potentially available at 15 hit do most of those marks, like Timo Meier and Kyle Connor but not all. Of course, they're still a fantastic Plan B (or in Connor's case, Plan A2).
Other guys, like Merkley, Konecny, White, Harkins, Eriksson-EK and my dark horse Jeremy Bracco, don't quite hit all those check boxes.

Sounds kind of like Bo Horvat. It wouldn't be an exciting pick but if he turns out like Horvat he would be a good role player for the big team.

He was lights out at the WU18 so you could say his average WHL numbers may be due to the team he plays for. He's a really good skating center with good hockey IQ so you can understand why teams would be high on him.

I hate low ceiling players. They are just as likely to bust as anyone, but if they do hit, you're getting basically Backlund. With the calibre of talents in this draft, Backlund would be a disappointing pick for 15.

His stats alone mean nothing without proper context. Once he came back from his injury and got settled he had 39 points in 24 games. He was one point back of team lead in scoring, despite playing 20+ less games. He has elite level vision and passing. A very smart player who was also a responsible two-way player for Seattle.
Stats alone suggest he's a dynamite offensive player. Beyond that there is alot to like too.
Couple unfortunate injuries are the only thing keeping him out of the Strome/Marmer group IMO

He's as close a comparable to Bennett in this draft in terms of raw skills. Just a little shorter. I don't like the idea of trading up, but if he's on the board at 11, I'd be talking up the Panthers to see if they were willing to drop 4 picks.

Yeah, the worry is the aloofness "Joe Thornton syndrome" I've seen thrownaround about him. That might turn some teams off, but for the Flames, with Bennet and Monahan it doesn't worry me.
Barzal could end up being a good Tanguay like winger for Calgary.

Do the Flames need another playmaker though? I feel like a gifted goal scorer is a more pressing need.
