Wow, the biggest takeaway from that Gregor article is that the Oilers don't have any games in the Eastern timezone after 18 Dec this upcoming season. They only have three Eastern roadtrips the entire season and they're done before Christmas.

How about this as an alternate hypothesis to the "refs aren't calling the rulebook" hypothesis?
"Teams learned how to play a slightly more disciplined game and avoided taking as many penalties"
Revolutionary stuff, I know.

Draisaitl finished with 2 goals, McDavid 2 assists and they were both a combined -8 (probably).

Pathetic, who actually wants to watch more special teams.

Half glass full, the first third of the season will be grueling, hopefully enough so that it sinks their whole season. Particularly with the spectre of spending most of the bleakest part of the year stuck in Edmonton hanging over their heads.
I know it's a reach to hope a Stanley Cup Finalist experiences this type of fallback, but it is my sworn duty to wish unfortunate things on the Oilers.

A drop in penalties actually helped the Oilers since their PK sucked last year without Foegele and Macleod.
Edmonton was fairly mid in powerplay - same percentage as Ottawa. But they killed below that - they were behind Utah.

I think both of these things have factored in. Players have figured out what they can and can't do when defending against McDavid. He is a very fast and skilled player, but not completely unpredictable.
But I also think the officials were getting tired of being duped into calling penalties only to have it pointed out after that there was clear embellishment or outright fabrication (i.e. McDavid grabbing sticks or flopping after incidental contact that sometimes even he initiated). It's the classic boy who cried wolf.
I can't imagine the league overall would think it's a good look to have their poster boy sitting in the penalty box all the time either. So even if McDavid losing the benefit of doubt means that once in a while someone does get away with something that should be a penalty, the Oilers should be thanking their lucky stars that he also seems immune to taking embellishment penalties as much as he should. It more than evens out in their favour.

Mavi Diary - Day 17
Dear diary. I wanted to comment on Leon and my request for more penalties to be called. What people don’t realize is that it takes a lot of work to be able to play on the power play. We play the entire 2 minutes so that others don’t have to. It helps coach as he only needs to worry about 2 players as boo boo, Leon and I take on the burden for the team.
People don’t realize how hard I work on leg kicking my skates as high as I can at the slightest breeze. Not easy. Leon works hard at his sneaky dirty plays where no one can see the spears and slew feet, to then change and make it completely obvious that the opponent looked at him so hard that he falls over. Difficult.
I’m also misunderstood. I’m of course interested in seeing brands and flex on the opponents’ stick so I grab it. Some players let me have their stick no problem. Other times I tuck it under my arm after grabbing the stick so I can keep it. If the opponent doesn’t want to let me try out his stick, I’ve found that the best thing is to throw a tantrum and fall dramatically to the ice. This works best on the other side of the referees so they only see the fall.
Mr. Gretzky also told me to watch his old games and so now I point out to referees every chance that I get the sheer injustice of everything. This also helps our fans and broadcasters know that oilers don’t get everything we deserve.
Chat tomorrow Diary.

Most of us do. However, since the PP is about the only thing that the Coilers have going for them, that's all they know and want.

The diving penalty needs to be a penalty just for the opposing player. Calling a trip and then calling a dive is so dumb. I absolutely can't stand that.

League hasn’t done enough over the last couple years to get McCrybaby his cup. Now they are going to add an even softer schedule to their usual muffin schedule to get them over.

Sometimes calling both is warranted - it can be a trip AND a dive.
However, sometimes it is just a dive, and the refs have to have the balls to call it as such.

And make sure that their insurance covers refereeing in Edmonton; maybe they should pay a premium for additional coverage.

Oilers should penalized as often as possible, even if it's not warranted.

Sure but the Dive should negate the original infraction, going on the PK for getting called for diving, would correct the behavior. If it is always offsetting, there is no reason not to do it. Oilers would be way happier playing 4 on 4 or 5 on 4 then they would 5 on 5.
The way the rule is called now, it is not a deterrent. Which I also suspect why refs don't call it often.
