Boy, Nylander has a killer shot. Does it rival the Finns? His speed is deceiving. What I like the most? Patience. Doesn't rush a darn thing.

IMO Nylander has a better shot than Puljujarvi. Laine and Nylander both have amazing shots. I'd say Laine's one time slapshot is one of the heaviest and fastest I've ever seen at his age.

Highlights of Laines one timer on his off wing are very impressive for an 18 year old. I know I mentioned it earlier, but it's true.
Nylander has a great wrist shot.

I could be guilty of being the YouTube scout but aside from not being the biggest guy in the draft I really like Nylander's game. I know Tkachuck and Dubois fit more of an organizational need but if we fall to drafting 7th and the other 2 are both taken I think Nylander is an absolute steal.
But if we draft 6th, and Chychrun and Nylander are the two still available, who do you take?

I am going to differ somewhat from the consensus on here and say that, assuming roughly equal talent level, I would take the defenseman. I think our C's are already there (or, at least, going to be there), we have our game-breaking forward, and goaltending will not be solved by a 1st round pick anyhow. I think it's Keith and Doughty that win the Cups, because it's almost like they guarantee that nothing bad will happen for 30-35 minutes every game. So keep adding top-end defensemen because you can never have too many. I want to be Nashville, but with the forwards, and our forwards are already better than theirs. Not sure if I explained that as well as I hoped too...

If Dubois, the Fins, and Matthews are gone by the time the Flames go to pick, and our options are Chychrun, Tkachuk, and Nylander, I take Chychrun and run. The foursome at the top are all higher potential guys than the rest, two first line centers and two game breaking wingers. After that, you go for whatever has the highest value, and Chychrun is the tops of that list.
Might as well overload a position and allow yourself options down the road. Between Brodie, Hamilton, Andersson, Kylington, Hickey and Chychrun the Flames would be absolutely lethal 1-6 and all of them would be under 28 three years from now.

Yes, but Brodie is not quite Keith or Doughty (yet), and two would be even better than one... For example, if Juolevi (sp?) really projects like that, I take him 4th. If Chychryn really is Ekblad level I take him 4th, maybe 3rd. I really don't know if they are that good, but presumably we employ the people that would figure that out.

Oilers keep drafting forwards, so the idea of drafting defenceman can't be a bad one.

I agree with Vlad...and it's mostly because the team can be looking forward to life beyond Gio...so another Top 3 D may very well help keep the teams competitive window open longer than would be, otherwise.

And chychrun has played some time on the wing hasn't he? The kid looks like the real deal IMO.

Man, today's McKeen's draft ranking is interesting.
- Laine at 1
- Matthews at 2
- Mcleod at 3
- Puljujarvi at 4
- Juolevi at 5

Just when I thought I knew a little something about the draft rankings...

So which of these kids exude "character" which we've been placing a big time importance on lately (rightfully so in my mind - see janko/gaudreau signing)

Hard to know off ice character. I'd say after the first tier the secondary guys that stand out for on ice character to me would be McLeod and Tkachuk. Both guys seem to have that high compete level and consistency shift to shift that I think the Flames really value.

You gotta wonder if McKeen's went for the shocker picks to drive website traffic.

The only thing lacking on Mcleod's resume is the points, then again Nylander put up only 14 point more. Reading scouting reports; his speed, skill, shot, compete, size, faceoffs are all a plus. One report compared his skating to McDavids.
Tkachuk's team, Knights, scored 106 more goals then McLeod's team.
He could be the steal of the draft. If we stay at #5, I'd be happy with one of Matthews, Finns, Dubois or Mcleod.

Cliff Pu for the Knights has had a good playoff. I'd be happy with taking a flier on him. Looks like a shutdown C with good wheels.
