Sounds a little like the salt and pepper sardine(?) you can get at T Pot for dim sum.
Also reminds me of the plethora of options for tinned sardines in Portugal.
Mm... Yum.

Normally I'd call shenanigans on your post, as no out of state (or country) purchaser should be subject to paying California sale tax, but for some reason, in your case, I find it completely believable that you did.

I only bought one of the cars at a dealership, the used SL500 and paid California sales tax. I was quite young when I bought the car and there may have been a mechanism in order to get the tax rebated but I wasn't aware of it. I was in a rush to close the deal as this was in Anaheim (technically Fulerton I think) and it was going to be the Cup clinching game for the Ducks in 2007. I recall driving around in this car and it was a regular night after they won the cup. To this day it still totally shocks me.
As for American's buying up Canadian cars in droves, it's actually a big thing and big business. There is a little paperwork sure but curber's and dealerships are literally buying car carrier loads of them.

I don't really eat dim sum but sardines/anchovies or other smaller fishes like red mullet are really nice. The key is just the simplicity of the fish with EVOO/lemon. These fish are so cheap, healthy and easy to make and very tasty. I would throw in salted cod in the same mix although not a small fish but the same idea.
Portugal I think may be the biggest canned exporter of fish? Regardless even canned options are great but I have been advised from a few trusted Dr's to stay away from canned ones from China.

This doesn't sound like you had one instance of paying California state tax.

I was literally buying cars from dealers for profit, paying California sales tax, import duties, GST and Canadian inspection and it was still worth it.

I think I geeked my ankle just now. First dream in forever. Was stuck in a hotel room for some reason and the door had a note scribbled on paper above the peephole saying “unsee it”. It’s a monster and it bursts in and I’m kicking it. But I’ve turned around in my sleep and I’m full kicking the headboard as I wake up with my chest burning. It’s been an hour and I’m still unsettled.

JFC dude, full kicking the headboard? That's like night terrors stuff. My dad has that, he's put a foot through the drywall one time. Gotta see someone about that.

I think the only annoyance is the occasional sardine that has a super weird bitter aftertaste, but sorta lightly battered and simple salt/spice/sour and they're quite good.
Hmm... that kinda reminds me of what I occasionally do for brussels sprouts. I wonder if that works together as a food combo.... and damn, I'm craving a canned sardine in tomato sauce sandwich... I need to eat more fish and I've totally overlooked sardines and other options have been a pain in the ass. A solution! Awesome!
Oops, wrong thread. I mean... grumble grumble, inconvenient I have to go buy them now.

Also the “actual fresh” thing is noticeable to nobody… you’re being a snob on an unsnobby thing. It’s silly.

Good grief.
Here, knock yourself out next time you go to Victoria, you can do the comparison yourself. I realize frozen isn't that much worse but like virtually everything animal, unfrozen is better.

As pointed out, unfrozen is better on the day it’s caught. For every other situation, frozen is better.

What about stores with live fish in tanks? I assume they swim in so much of their own filth, frozen would be better.

I'm sure there was some TV Chef espousing frozen fish in sushi, that many high end places use it

You have an extreme sense of nostalgia. Cars didn't last 500K kms "back in the day". Hondas have had transmission problems since forever, I have no idea why people keep thinking the damned things are all that reliable. Jesus I remember when people complained about ABS being unreliable. And automatic transmissions. And the e-brake button on the floor. And shift stalks on the steering column. And the tranny hump in the back seat.
|
Who you drive around in your back seat is your business. A tad heartless referring to them like that. Is it the Adam's apple or the 'other' tranny hump that concerns you?

Anyway I'm not sure how my gear grinder of "damn, I had to replace my furnace motor, that sucks" turned into multiple pages of debate about planned obsolescence.
