It’s so great they trade their 1st round pick and then immediately lose to a bad team. Long may it continue!

Have to head into the belly of the beast this weekend. My daughters team is playing Edmonton for the Junior female provincial title, best of five and first two up there so we have to spend the night. Pray for us CP.

With Henrique and Carrick, Edmonton's average forward age is 30.8.
With Stetcher their average defense age is 28.9.
Only Macleod (2018 2nd round) on forward and Bouchard (2018 1st round) on defense are younger than McDavid. In other words, in the 8.5 years since McDavid was drafted the Oilers have only managed to add two assets younger than him to their "championship" team. That is some no-good drafting!
The Oilers have 4 forwards under 30.
Recent Stanley cup winners:
Vegas - 9
Colorado - 12
Tampa - 8
(And those teams were even younger when they won their cups.)
Bunch of fossils up north - only Pittsburgh has an older forward group.

Can't help but laugh at all the talking heads on Sportsnet picking the Oilers as Stanley Cup favorites. Really?? It's long been speculated that they needed to upgrade their defence before they can make any noise. Well, let year they added a top defenseman in Ekholm and they were out in the second round. So this year the big add is Troy Stecher and this is what's going to catapult them to a Stanley Cup. Alrighty then.

Not sure any unbiased observer can call Edmonton favorites in the west, let alone the whole thing.
Vegas if healthy have to be the cream of the crop.
Colorado with Mittlestadt and Nuchuskin back should be considered as good a bet as Edmonton or better given that they've gone the distance before.
Winnipeg has the better goalie, is more structured and added two goal scorers.
Vancouver if they're for real would be a very difficult out.
A lot of people like Dallas and their defence is built for playoffs with Tanev in the fold.
LA are probably the "easiest" prey for the Oilers given their head to head history but their no slouches either, continue to improve and have taken Edmonton the distance, so it's no guarantee.
I'll never get the constant hype. But this year might be the most perplexing that "experts" would pick the oilers.

Kane was fined 2500 for jnsportsmanlike conduct against Cole Sillinger last night. In November 2023, he was WARNED for a hit from behind! Yup, no special treatment whatsoever.

By how the West stocked up, the Oilers are out in the first round. They probably became the 7th or 8th likely seed to come out of the West.

The Oilers:
2024: One draft pick in the first four rounds (2nd round pick)
2023: One draft pick in the first five rounds (2nd round pick)
2022: One draft pick in the first four rounds (32nd OA, already looking like a bust)
The Oilers are also down 4 draft picks for 2025 and beyond.
Hockey Writers has the Oilers with the 29th best prospect system as of now.
Meanwhile Draisaitl's deal is coming to an end...

Congratulations to all the young players who will be playing for other teams because the Oilers traded their picks!

As a fan the picks are worthless to me right now, it’s win now and then enter an awful period but I don’t want anything left on the table. Unfortunately I don’t think the moves that have been made are enough to keep pace with the real cream of the crop. Could they win? Sure, but it’s going to take a supernova effort from some players as they won’t be icing the best roster against the best teams.
