Need to add ",2015" to the title... This is so old that the title is relevant again!

Even just the threat of Uber has improved Taxi service in this city.

Cab drivers can't wait until Uber gets here. A lot of cab drivers will become Uber drivers and it'll make them more busy.
Cab companies on the other hand....

I wonder how other cities that have uber haven't burned to the ground in mass chaos yet.
Just let uber operate in Calgary for Pete's sake you short sighted politicians.

I think with the economy, less people are going out as well, which might also factor into taxi availability being better.

They have.
Calgary has a set of regulations under which über can choose to operate. These regulations are less onerous then NewYork which uber currently operates.
Also it sounds like the keys please guys are setting up a ride sharing service as well.

I haven't been following the Uber development myself, did they solve the liability and security issues yet? There are stories all the time about "unlicensed" private transportation services getting into trouble - riders getting injured, robbed, raped, etc. by these moonlight drivers and they are not protected.

Has the insurance industry come out with a product available for purchase that would properly offer coverage for Uber drivers yet at a price point that still makes it economical sense for drivers?
Didn't think so.

Uber isn't a real company, but a Ponzi scheme. It's is the 21st century equivalent of Herbal Life.

You will have to give us way more detail. If you are talking about valuation of the company, maybe. But the business model is good. I was just in Vegas and used the service, it was very good way better than cabs there and much cheaper.

The business model isn't good; Uber wants to compete against private vehicles and mass transit which requires both large numbers of drivers and extremely low rates. This results in Uber losing huge amounts of money and high turnover of drivers. Without constantly raising more money, Uber will be bankrupt.

What? I don't see how you get to that conclusion.
I think you're VASTLY overestimating how closely Uber and Mass Transit are competing for people. People who take transit aren't taking cabs and vice versa.
How do Taxi's compete against transit and private cars in your world? Uber has very minimal sunk costs and doesn't have the depreciating assets like Taxi companies do.

Uber is great for the consumer. And that's all that matters in this society.

Uber started as an app similar to Tinder - matching drivers and riders, but there is no insurance or verification on how your "transaction" will go.
Unless Uber now has proper licensing and liability insurance and driver background checks, I am still iffy about the legality of its business practice.

This is not to get into a debate about their service vs uber's but tappcar drivers pay around $200/week for their access to be listed through the app, insurance, benefits and pension. Seems like a fairly reasonable amount.
