Uncanny Valley Peter Cushing pretty much opened the door for this. The family should be ashamed of themselves, but money.
Sadly, apparently they need a law requiring explicit consent from the performer themselves while they're alive for this type of thing now.

Its definitely going to make contractual Image Rights clauses more interesting.

I remember that this was Lucas' dream concept back when he started making the prequels.
To have CGI become realistic enough so that you didn't have to deal with actors on set.
I admit while I liked the return of Tarkin in Rogue One, the CGI really didn't look human, but it worked because of the character of Tarkin.

It worked for me because the character of Tarkin was cold and reptilian and precise.
So to me it wasn't that jarring.
Yeah the Princess Leia one didn't work.

Yeah the Princess Leia one didn't work.
My favourite Tarkin was the one in New Hope that didn't look like shiny oily plastic.

I don't know if Leia in Rogue One is another one of those some people see a black dress others see purple or whatever, but I've never thought the CGI looked bad. It has never been jarring to me and always found it very seamless.
I've watched it dozens of times trying to figure out what people are complaining about and I literally just can't see it..

It's a good thing I didn't watch the two movies side-by-side.
The CGI was pretty obvious but I still liked that he was there. Same with Leia.

I'd rather they had just shown the back of his head as he talked. If you can't do it perfectly, don't bother. Takes you out of the movie.

Something seems odd in the comparison in the CGI side.
I remember it looking better than that when I watched Rogue One, something seems odd with the contrast there.

The source video is pretty easily manipulated by playback settings and programs/equipment used. The people who make the YouTube videos will topically choose settings that most support their argument.

That's also exactly how it came across to me when watching it in the theatre. It was immediately obvious and looked terrible, and was pretty roundly panned when the movie came out, before that youtube clip. So, there's that too.
