Hmm....succinct and to the point. Points docked for lack of 'No Good' but I'll allow it.

Just grasping on to any explanation that isn't E=NG, for as long as they can.
I think this is one of the stages they go through every year when the wheels start to fall off. They're in that denial/intangible excuses stage.

They were the best team in the league to start the season, its a long way down to get back to their comfort zone, but soon enough Connor McWhiner is going to have to make peace with a new shiny toy in the playbox.
Its always a rough transition when you go from being Woody to Buzz and then back to Woody again.

The Oilers have played solid hockey this year. Fundamentally, this is a pretty decent team with a game breaking talent up front. The formula is there for a strong season. Just need our goalies to find a groove and for Hendricks to disappear.

Because they have a better overall defence and a slightly older group that is less prone to making mistakes. Johnson had soldified their goaltending and they made the playoffs the season before.
Until Edmonton proves it by learning how to actually win close games, they are better and will overtake the Oilers by Christmas, probably sooner.
They're not much better though if you want to take solace in that.

I think it is safe to say McDavid is getting more that $10 million on his next contract. He is getting probably more like $14 million. If the Oilers don't want to pay it, someone else will.

He's not getting $14 million as a RFA. is he?

If he makes it to RFA, I'd be shocked if a team didn't submit an offer sheet for 12M minimum.

prbly not 14 but unlike gaudrea who had almost no leverage, McDavid has a ton of it. fingers crossed he keeps up this scoring pace while the oilers still swirl around the toilet

Oh that would be brilliant! The Oilers win the draft lottery while McDavid wins the Art Ross for a couple of years. Oh that would be priceless!

Lol that McDeepika is in 'deepika' denial. You cant exactly devalue OT wins seeing as there's also overtime in the playoffs and it often plays a role in deciding a series. And a core part of being successful is having solid goaltending. I think right after gaudreau was injured they rode Chad a bit yes, they kind of had to, but the team itself has come quite a way since then. Now they're winning through contributions throughout their lineup. Something you can't say the Oilers are getting on a consistent basis. McDavid and Leon can't compensate for all that dead weight by themselves.

Also, "Fundamentally"? Is that this year's "visually" or something? So "fundamentally" they are good despite having a mediocre record where one player has had a hand in nearly half of the goals produced, and the top pairing are still arguably a middle pairing on most other teams.
And Calgary is "fundamentally" not better than them because they win a lot of one goal games, and use their strong play of their goaltender to their advantage. Even though the team stats indicate players are contributing by committee. I guess having a legitimate top pairing and the team depth to compensate for the absence of their top player, and subpar play of their other top player over the first two months is less of a "fundamentally" sound model than having lots of supposedly game-breaking talent up front that ironically can't break close games lol.

if he makes it to RFA status, he'll have 30 teams submitting offer sheets.

This team has no finish in close games, I love it. Can't wait until they meet the current version of the Flames, good luck with that

Especially with Gaudreau ramping it up hard after his return from the injury, and Monahan actually putting it in the back of the net, it's going to be a fun spectacle.

Guarantee he goes for $9.7M/6 years. Draisaitl will get $6.5.
Looking at their salary cap, they should have space for those.

He'll get the league max for the minimum timeframe to take him to UFA status. Count on it. There will be 30 other teams, including the Flames, that will be lining up with an identical offer sheet. League max times five years. Gives the player the most amount of money that is allowed, and then guarantees he is available to the to the open market at the earliest moment possible. Remember, that Edmonton has the right to match, which they will, but the terms will be set by the offer sheet McDavid signs. The strategy by every team should be to get him to UFA status as quickly as possible, that way the player can pick and choose and not have the protection of Edmonton's right to match.
His agency should be recommending he wait until his contract expires and entertain all offer sheets. If they don't, they are completely screwing this kid's earning potential up. This is the best strategy to get the best money for the kid long term and get him to free agency, where he controls his destiny of who he plays with, quickest. If his representatives follow this strategy McDavid will be out of Edmonton in six years, max. Signing that contract may make the Oilers per-emptively trade him in year three or four of the contract, so they get something rather than nothing when he hits UFA status. The Oilers are screwed if his agency has any brains.
