Please explain how a 22-year old defenseman with 11 points in 35 NHL games, that would've been on the opening night roster this year if not for a fractured ankle, will be waiver fodder next October? Also, let's ignore that he's waiver exempt. Spot-on analysis as per usual.

Just usually something you maybe ask about verbally and get into the details of when it gets more serious but expecting to get his medical records when a deal isn't even close and 5 teams are kicking tires seems odd. Getting access to/sharing someone's medical records is handled pretty carefully outside the NHL, is considered pretty sensitive personal info under privacy law and not something you can pass around without consent from the individual in most cases.
Anyway, readily admit that what I don't know about the NHL and its trade processes is vast so maybe it's different here!
Do think that moving Markstrom would be a good move for the flames if the return is good. Wince a little at how bad the team will be without him but would be a huge step in the direction of rebuilding the team.

Interesting, but not weird IMO. Team is considering trading one of their top performers, while attempting to make the playoffs. Would make me wonder if they know something I don’t. Prudence would dictate such an inquiry.
Conroy and the management team are certainly earning their keep. A lot of irons in the fire (including a possible Kyllington extension), but man do they ever seem to be on top of things. Time will tell how this shakes out, but certainly impressed with the performance of Conroy.

I think teams check the medical records of all players they are trading for, or would like to trade for.

The other teams are checking Markstrom's medical records because they're curious about the medical marvel that made him better after he returned from injury.

Interesting conversation with Francis on the Marek show today.
Their talk starts 49 minutes in. Marek thinks (not in a I have a sources way, but in a I speculate way, he makes this clear) that Mercer would be part of a Markstrom trade package. Francis notes that Markstrom is more open to a trade than he thought, per his interview with him the other day when Markstrom said "the ball is in their court."
He's certain the window on Hanifin returning has closed. The price is apparently a 1st, a prospect, and a player who can play now (a Sharangovich/Kuzmenko type). They both note the difference between Conroy and other GMs who only want futures.
Francis goes on to talk about how Calgary management doesn't believe in a tear it down rebuild and thinks it's better to acquire players like those 2 ^ to act as temporary stop gaps. Flames believe in having good vets around to groom the young players. Francis says this is the most positive and energetic dressing room he's ever seen right now.
Also reiterates this Markstrom rumor is only happening because of Wolf and they need to get him an NHL spot ASAP.

If Mercer was actually on the table for Markstrom then Markstrom should have a new address even with retention

I think Holtz falls into a similar category. Either of those players should get this deal done.
I hope they can make the math work. It's such a big win for Conroy to pull off a trade like that given how he's structuring this re-tool.

If Mercer can be had (along with a high pick), Murray needs to swallow that 2 years of retention.
They are going to need good young centers that can play. We're getting by with Sharky for now but eventually that decimated center depth will be evident.

Yeah, either would be the best return for a goalie in ages. I still don't really buy it or else I think the deal would be done even with some decent retention.

Get Mercer and then you can trade Backlund in the offseason or next year and keep the re-tool going.

Mercer certainly falls into the "under 24 who can play center" wishlish that Craig alluded to last week.

If the basics of a deal are almost there with NJD, based on Conroy's MO as he described it after the Lindholm trade, he might be shopping that around to other teams that expressed an interest in Marky.
Wouldn't the return have to be the similar to Lindholm or Hanifin? Pick, propsect and player. With Mercer, maybe the pick is late round and the player is a salary dump.
All that to say I won't be surprised if it ends up being a deal out of left field like LAK or something.

This may be the most interesting comment to come out in the media in a while. Moving Markstrom to make that happen? Dumping Vladar achieves that goal. Moving Markstrom is a huge statement on what the team thinks of Wolf. Wow.

It 100% could mean that, but it could also be that the main driver for picking Markstrom over Vladar is being driven by the assets Markstrom could bring back.
Simple solution might be move Vladar for low pick, Wolf can play. But I'm guessing why we keep hearing the Flames will move Markstrom for a very strong return only because that's what it would take for the Flames to not take the "easy route" on getting Wolf playing time. Which if true should be really good news for anyone doubting if this team is being mostly driven by longer term orientation vs. in year success.

I don't think it's unreasonable. If you're going to play Goalie musical chairs, you want to get the most out of the goalie that finds himself the odd man out while also letting your new prized possession get games under his belt.
I'd personally prefer Markstrom to stay and ship Vladar out (Wolf and Marky over the next two years would be solid), but if you look at it from a top-down point of view, Markstrom can better help fill pieces the team needs to re-tool outside of the goaltending position. And I think Vladar has proven himself enough to be reliable as a backup and stand-in at the NHL level if Wolf begins to struggle.
Markstrom is also currently on a heater, and we've seem him when he's been off his game, which at his lowest, is not much better than Vladar. I bet Conny seems this as an opportunity to get the most value out of him. I'm not sure this would be rumor-worthy if Marky was ice cold.

From what I have heard if the Flames were interested in Holtz they would have approached Markstrom already because the Devils are willing to part with him. They are really zeroed in on getting a young centre back so it will be Mercer imo. Also, if they decide to keep Kuzmenko and Coronato graduates where are you playing Holtz? He needs to be in a top 6 RW spit to really develop. I love the player but I don't see a fit here.

He had trouble making the team every year, good chance trend continues. Points is meaningless when you can’t defend. Remember Valimaki?

The internet has it that St. Louis could move Pavel Buchnevic. Bleacherreport baldy speculates that Calgary couls be a destination.
Not likely my opinion. However, Blues have 21 yo centre, Jake Neighbours, 18g and 5a. Hometown? Calgary AB. Maybe there could be a deal there. Admittedly, it would be insane given that the Blues and Flames are fighting for the last wildcard. But hey, why not?
