That should have been obvious after the multiple breaks last time though, right? Like, one break you can put it down to other factors, but when it is in multiple spots it sure seems to me that indicates it could fail anywhere at any time.

Ah, they were going to start replacing that section in the spring.
Spoiler!

The project will happen in two stages:

Stage A: From the Shaganappi Pump Station to 73 Street NW on the west side of the Bow River.
Stage B: Continues from 73 Street NW to 89 Street NW, with a potential extension to the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant.
Stage A is currently in the design phase and planned to go to Request for Proposal (RFP) in late 2025. Construction is expected to start in Spring 2026 on Stage A. Stage B will undergo detailed design and procurement in Q3 2026.

The map is so ####ty that I literally cannot tell if I am in the boil water advisory area or not. Annoying.

I don’t think this incident extends to the BC coast but I’m not fully sure where this pipeline originates.

It’s impossible to build those types of pipelines to the BC coast, remember?

Nope, I'm on the north side of Bowness Rd and can't tell if I'm in it based in being under the red dotted line or not. I guess it's "when in doubt assume you're in it'" but it's such a damn inconvenience that I'd rather not assume anything.

i think part one is an alternate feedermain

https://www.watercanada.net/construc...icing-project/

then the old feedermain can be addressed

Ah, interesting. If you look at the water service map here:

https://data.calgary.ca/Health-and-S...-map/h33q-z247

You can see properties are serviced north and south of Bowness Road from what I'd assume is the same line, so ya, it wouldn't make sense for the south to be affected and north not. I'd boil until further info is available.

It was actually Druh Farrell who spouted nonsense like this. Good riddance.

I think the inspection tool identified the worst areas of the cable breaks keeping in mind that they were both limited in time and materials to do the repairs so likely at to limit it to the worst parts. So they new this was bad but likely assessed it could make the next repair window.

Then they planned on making the next set of repairs shortly based on the data and have contingency plans for failures. This is what a balanced plan for repair and replacement looks like.

I didn't hate everything she did, but the fluoride stuff drove me nuts among a few others.

She volunteered to take my kid's class on a walking tour of the East Village. While she was super knowledgeable about the history and developments, way too much time was spent talking about her personal involvement in all of it. So many egos in that line of work.

They knew this area was at risk, hence prioritizing this section for spring:

I'd hate to be the engineer getting the call this morning to figure out how to perform the repair right now while keeping the spring plans in mind.

Updates from the presser right now:

"Calgary mayor Jeromy Farkas says planned New Year’s Eve celebrations are still going ahead tonight. He says they do want Calgarians to take voluntary measures to reduce indoor water use.

City of Calgary officials confirm the feeder main was being monitored by acoustic monitoring and there was nothing to indicate an issue before the rupture. No wire snaps either. The piece of pipe in question was installed by in 1975.

Officials say they’re “ready to roll” on repairs as they have the supplies. Next step is digging up the area to get to the pipe. City of Calgary water directors are saying 7-10 days estimate, but that could change once they get eyes on the break."

Did anyone see those photos of Gondek taking a pickaxe to the water pipe in the middle of the night? Those seemed rather incriminating...

So 50 years old. And if I remember correctly last time wasn’t it like there were no guarantees but engineers thought that after 50 years it’s kinda anyone’s guess as to how much longer it’d last?

10 days outage is actually pretty impressive all things considered, my opinion.
