I will be more surprised by an NDP win than a UCP one, no matter what a mess Danielle Smith creates.
Or remember how badly they messed up the PPA, or the terrible rail contract, or or or or the RoYaLtY ReViEw???

Your second paragraph, I agree 100%.

A warm reception by twitter in the comments section for Gondek on her response to Smith.

Look around the chickens are coming home to roost.
My dude, we know who Smith is. She has a 25+ year track record of publicly embarrassing herself first in the Herald, then in Politics (first try), then on the radio, and now again at the podium.

There are infinite ways to attack someone this disingenuous.

Who would you rather have in that position? My way or the highway Kenney? Chase away all sources of income Notley?
I voted in this leadership race and Smith was not my top choice. I am neither a supporter or a critic. I will say though that she seems to be willing to interact with many people and explain herself like she did her entire campaign. She is fighting for economic prosperity and respect for all Albertans. Even when the media has been irrational or harsh she hasn’t backed down and remains calm to explain her point and thought process.
What is it that you want from a politician?
It very much seems that urban areas seek one style of governance and rural areas seek another. I don’t believe that rural or urban are wrong, they just have different needs.
A politician that is going to ram one way or the other down the others throat whether they are comfortable with it or not will not work. A politician who will listen and adapt and offer choice and options will work best. She seems more likely to offer that than previously mentioned politicians. We need a someone who will do anything for the betterment of Albertans. The fake games and strong worded letters to Trudeau, just for him to ignore us, and push policies that hurt us are not cutting it for me.
I just don’t see how there can be so much dislike to someone coming in and being a strong voice for Alberta when there was already so much dislike for Kenney.
What do you have against her other than you just don’t like her and don’t know why other than the tv sent the message that way.

No she doesn't. She said she's going ahead with rural style leadership, won't give Calgary-Elbow and MLA, and threatened to fire socialists in AHS. She basically gave a big FU to Calgary and Edmonton.

That's not respect, that's ideological gaslighting.

Do not confuse her snake-oil salesmanship with good leadership or respect. She is in this for her six month window to implement as much libertarian damage as she can squeeze in. And she knows it.

"Fighting for economic prosperity" - this Alberta sovereignty act nonsense will drive away investment. Every economic expert in the country agrees

"Respect for all Albertans" - our never ending b|thfest about how hard we have things when we were born on 3rd base continues to lose us respect within Confederation. I'm embarrassed to be an Albertan more than I am proud of it lately.

She’s the one-note embodiment of all the worst pandering to the far right Kenney did in his time in office. She has nothing to offer anyone with moderate views and regularly demonizes anyone with views left of center, so how is she fighting for their betterment, exactly?

She doesn’t listen and adapt to anything. She ignores everything she disagrees with and blames others any time someone questions her. She went from people an opportunist to cozying up to the only group of people gullible enough to respect her.

You honestly must be joking if you think anyone is going to buy your “what could people have against her besides her one TV comment?” thing. You either believe people are stupid, you’re acting stupid yourself, or you’re completely uninformed. Neither compels anyone to take you seriously.

It would be interesting if you consider this move as a political play that Smith is more worried about losing the anti-vaxxers/convoy people than the more moderate conservatives.

You left out "getting fired from the disastrous CBE". I believe that would slot in before sucking at the Herald. I don't think she has succeeded at anything in her life, so a perfect person to put in charge of a failing political party.

Looks at how well Brexit went

Hmm yes this seems exactly like the sort of thing we would be interested in in Alberta!

So you believe all of AHS should be safe regardless of inefficiencies? What exactly do you believe she will do to harm Calgary-Elbow that past leaders haven’t?

I am assuming you are conflating AHS managerial layer inefficiencies with front-line service, because you appear to be brushing the entire AHS question with one stroke.

AHS might need some structural changing but firing 'socialists' isn't one of them. Also, restructuring AHS does not guarantee the required improvements to front-line service or the staffing needed to handle COVID and ongoing ER challenges.

Nevermind Smith injecting her political ideologies into a public institution in order to purge good, hard-working people for no reason other than being a PC or NDP hire.

I'll take the advice of people like Dr. Darren Dagly, Dr. Shazma Mithani, Dr. Verna Yiu, and other MD's who have an excellent handle of the situation rather than a highly-slanted politician intent with an agenda.

As for Calgary-Elbow, you'll have to explain to me why they don't deserve an MLA. She told them go see Tyler Shandro, and that guy is an absolute disaster.

Albertan's deserve better. Much better.

Fair enough. You are right. I am more of a supporter than I was of Kenney or Notley, thus the counter view of most on this thread. I was neutral on her but now as Premier, am willing to give her a chance as I do see some good that she offers that others in the past didn’t.

Smith is very much like Trump to me in that she's so far past what I thought would be an electable politician on the crazy scale that it bottles the mind. Now - true - she hasn't technically been elected yet, but this just might be where the winds are blowing in Alberta. Toxicity from the clown show down south has really taken hold.

Smith is the kind of person that wants to watch the world burn. She has no mandate from Albertans other than a tiny fraction that are not representative of the population yet she's going to ram through her hair-brained ideas because no MLA's will stand up for their constituents.

Alberta is going to get a lot more divided over the next 6 months and we can only hope she fails so badly that moderate conservatives have no choice but to vote against her.

Even my not very political 18 year old kid asked me why does it have to be so embarrassing to be a conservative these days.

Was Doug Schweitzer a good representative? I know my MLA rarely responds to any of my concerns and was a yes man to anything Kenney said regardless of the concerns of his constituents? There are 5 UCP MLA’s all within 15 minutes of Calgary - Elbow. Hopefully one of them should be useful enough to help with any issues anyone should have.

That said you are not wrong that there should be a representative. Hopefully some good candidates run for the next election and you get an MLA that listens and represents their constituents well. We’ve had way to many head nodders who govern for the party, not the people they represent.

Because they do it to themselves. They are so set on winning at all costs, they embrace whatever they can stuff into the "big tent", even if it is syphilis and rat poison. Doesn't matter, they are votes! Except then this happens. Conservatives need to realize one day to exclude voices that don't match their values, or they soon find their values overrun.

It's really all Preston Manning's fault.

Are you willing to accept the reality of what happened here? Smith is terrified of the risk losing the riding to the NDP, which would be a pretty big mark against her and a sign she doesn't have the support of cities. All of her justifications to date have been flimsier that her grasp on tax rates.
