Not overly happy the direction the organization is going. MacDermid, Westgarth and now this clown? Sorry Flames, useless thugs don't entertain me. In fact, they make me less inclined to to have interest in your product. Show me guys that can play the game of hockey. These three stooges do nothing but waste roster spots and keep players that could some day contribute to winner from getting the playing time they need.
With no Begin and no Ferland, the Heat need healthy human bodies to get them to the end of the season. Unfortunately (or not, depending on your perspective), Gillies is fairly representative of what's available on the minor-league free agent market in late January.

This is all part of Brian Burke's plan to end fighting in professional hockey.
Should be a good game for the Heat, feel out some of the new faces. Jones has to be a big boost to the lineup.

Gillies... was he the idiot that got the 10 game suspension for jumping over the boards when Phaneaf put his shoulder into Okposo?
He certainly hasn't had the shiniest record.
His sucker punch on Jarkko Ruutu apparently drew police attention (link). He had a 10 game suspension for hitting Cal Clutterbuck and a nine gamer for elbowing Tangradi.

I cannot find record of that specific hit being him but there were these two:
Quote:
During the third period of the game, Gillies elbowed Penguins' forward Eric Tangradi in the face, punched him several times while he was down on the ice, and proceeded to taunt him from the dressing room hallway. Tangradi suffered concussion like symptoms and remained out of the Penguins line-up indefinitely
And then his first game back from that suspension:
Quote:
In his first game back from the suspension, Gillies was ejected for a hit on Cal Clutterbuck in a game against the Minnesota Wild on March 2, 2011. After an in-person hearing, Gillies was suspended for 10 games for the incident
Then in Nov 2013 spearing a kid in Finland and getting a 5+20 and a plane ticket back to North America.
There's also a 5 game suspension from Jan 2, 2014 in the ECHL where it sounds like he either left the bench/3rd man in and beat the snot out of an unwilling opponent: http://www.hockeyfights.com/news/193542
His NHL career consists of 57 games, 261 Penalty Minutes.
His overall career is 885 games (OHL, ECHL, AHL, NHL, KHL, FIN) and 3661 PIM's.

So this guy gets suspended and pushed out of every league he's played in, has no history of being a decent hockey player at any level, and doesn't learn from his mistakes. He is more or less a violent criminal in my eyes. I sincerely hope that whatever happens during the rest of the Heat's season, he doesn't hurt anyone, but honestly his track record says he will.

Yea, that's sort of my concern now too. I wasn't well versed in his career until I went to look up that Phanuef/Okposo thing and EVERYTHING that comes up about him is his suspensions and dirty plays.
I'll be shocked if he goes 5 games with the Heat without some sort of suspension or even just being removed from the team. He doesn't sound like he fits into the Heat's style. I'm all for tough guys and enforcers who protect the team and do so smartly (McGrattan, Bissonnette), but this guy doesn't sound like the type to think through his decisions. He's going to hurt someone and it's going to cost the Heat.
