Tre thinking he can land both Tanev and Hanifin and not give up a 1st + 2 or 3 premium assets is laughable.
Timmins & Abruzzie? yep sure Tre, keep dreaming.
Flames trading Gilbert + Stromgren and a 1st for Dobson and Barzal I guess too. /greentext

Maybe Hanifin asking for $8M isn't that crazy...it feels like $7-8M is the right range based on his peers.
Personally I like looking at 5v5 performance for d-men because the PP skews production heavily.
Over the last three years at 5v5 (Team Rank / League Rank)
TOI: 3694: 19 (1st / 21st)
Goals: 19 (1st / T-18th)
Points: 72 (1st / T-19th)
Shots: 356 (1st / 18th)
Corsi %: 53.1%
xGF %: 54.5%
Looking at the 5v5 points specifically:
1) Karlsson - $11.5M
2) Josi - $9.0M
3) Makar - $9.0M
4) Hedman - $7.8M
5) Hughes - $7.8M
6) Toews - $7.25M
7) Faulk - $6.5M
8) Morrissey - $6.25M
9) Dunn - $7.35M
10) Fox - $9.5M
11) Skjei - $5.25M
12) Dahlin - $11.0M
13) Forsling - ???
14) Dobson - $4.0M (2025 - RFA)
15) Reilly - $7.5M
16) Letang - $6.1M
17) Bouchard - $3.9M (2025 - RFA)
18) Weegar - $6.25M
19) Hanifin - ???
20) Burns - $8.00M
21) McAvoy - $9.5M
22) Slavin - $5.3M (2025 UFA)
23) Sergachev - $8.5M
24) Andersson - $4.55M (2026 UFA)
25) Heiskanen - $8.5M
Flames are probably trying to use guys like Dunn, Toews, Hughes as comparables that are around $7.5M...while Hanifin's camp would point to Sergachev, Heiskanen, McAvoy etc.
I still feel like $8.0M is a stretch for Hanifin on the open market but looking at it more I think $7.5M is likely doable on a 7 year deal in UFA for sure.
Worst things to build around than a Hanifin-Weegar, Kylington-Andersson d-core. (Also that Weegar deal was a great signing and sometimes gets overlooked because the Huberdeau contract is bad).

My prediction.
Hanifin to Florida.
Tanev re-signs a 3 year deal.
Mangiapane & Oesterle to the Leafs.
Markstrom to the Devils.

I guess the Sabers are goalie hunting. And they're shopping Middlestadt. Could be something look in on.

Francis said to Huberdeau in the post-game interview "how happy are you when you see these young guys score goals, whether it's Rooney..." Rooney was born May 1993 and Huberdeau June 1993.

Starting to look like:
-Markstrom stays put out of necessity
-Vladar dealt/shed in the offseason
-Tanev traded soon, Kylington and Pachal's roles elevated
-Hanifin a last minute TDL haul after they try to negotiate down his 8M/yr ask and talk to his short lisit of teams that he would extend with
Fun times to be a fan. The renewed playoff hypes might be short-lived though

What are the Flames going to get for Markstrom to make it worth their while? Goalies, especially ones paid $6M, don't get great returns.
I think Marky has more value as a mentor to Wolf. A Vladar-Wolf tandem might be good for tanking, but I don't see it as being very good for Wolf's development.

I was thinking some teams must have been watching the last couple games dreaming of acquiring Hanifin-Tanev as a pair.

Well they have three retention slots still.
Markstrom who is playing like a top 10 starter at 3 million per should go for a pretty penny. But it probably makes sense for them to keep him if they want to "privot" instead of rebuild. Even though dealing him probably expedites the current rebuild that they deny is happening.

I thought Knies was getting top 6 minutes off and on at the expense of Bertuzzi. And the Leafs needed cheap ELCs to make the roster.

Yes, his 5on5 production is good. But that's only part of the equation. All the guys on that list that are getting big money, also provide PP production. If he doesn't, he shouldn't get the same money.

In general for a big return I think they will have to take back at least a couple M in goaltending salary

More production, leadership and more of a physical game.
Hanifin might be in his prime years, plays a durable style but the fact he stepped up his play specifically in a contract year.. theirs no guarantee he won't go back to his old self once the contract is signed.

Conroy's refusal to accept a "Calgary tax" and be taken to the cleaners by these UFAs has been impressive for the young GM. He knows what the numbers for each of these guys should be and is maintaining a line he won't cross to meet demands that signal that a player doesn't want to be a Flame first and foremost. If we need to bend the cap structure just to keep you, we'll be more than happy to arrange a deal for you to somewhere else.
It's great work to begin to restore the Flames from their "doormat" reputation in the wake of Treliving's tenure and set a new standard for players coming in.
