I've hated this trade from the beginning, and especially because it was to Vancouver. Has Calgary ever won a trade with Vancouver? I think of Paul Reinhart almost derailing the Stanley Cup run as the worst example.
I don't buy the reasoning re urgency in getting a deal done." A mid to late second round pick is nowhere near a sure thing to turn into anything as good as Sven is now. So Sven and his agent were unhappy with his treatment by Hartley et al and wouldn't re-sign when this contract was up. Well, the Flames still would have his rights, and if he'd played out the string in Adirondack with a good performance, and the situation was re-assessed at contract time, who's to say whether the dissatisfaction would still be there, or whether a trade for a prospect or draft pick with another team couldn't have worked out just as well. In the meantime, the baby Flames would have had a better chance of playoffs, and there was always the possibility that the big club would need him because of injuries down the stretch or in the playoffs.

Actually, I'm in the camp that thinks Flames should have done a better job with Sven, but I'm starting to get an idea that may have been hard to do.

What part of Sven wanting out do you not understand?
The Flames did Sven a solid. For THAT, HE should be thankful and gracious and shut his mouth about how he was treated.
From a Flames perspective, why keep a guy who didn't want to be here?

By sounds of it no other team thought Sven was worth trading a second round pick for. Sven has to clear waivers next year and I don't think he was even close to being a lock on the flames team.

good for him to do the "Akim Aliu" (= score 2 in the last game of the season with nothing on the line). Not surprised he's doing well, I guess he really needed a change of scenery. Will be interesting to see how he deals with the first bit of adversity.

The request to move began months ago prior to the trade deadline. Sometimes you just have to recognize when to cut your losses and get back the best value possible as much as you'd like the situation to turn around and the player change his and succeed.
Also as good as Sven right now? Please tell me exactly how good as an NHL player he's been this year.

So people feel betrayed because they stuck up for him, and now he's proving them wrong with his comments. I doubt very much it has anything to do with Sven feeling fortunate to be with the Nucks.

and i think people are reading too much into the positive things he's saying about the canucks as apparently trashing his former organization.
baertschi is from a very different culture. he's honest. doesn't give those boring and cliched answers in interviews.
i guess that often works against him in a canadian market because it's the expectation in player interviews that players hold back - that there has to be more behind each statement.
i don't think it's like that with sven. he's been transparent with the flames since day one.

Yeah its quite obvious at this point.
Sven wasn't going to re-sign + he was going to be waiver eligible next season + he was already passed by Gaudreau/Jooris/Granlund/Ferland + soon to be passed by Poirier/Bennett/Shore.
Trade him for what you could get, and as Treliving said: a 2nd round pick was by FAR the best offer they had from NHL teams. Which is no surprise given Friedman's previous report that other NHL teams thought Sven would be detrimental to their prospects. That's pretty damning.

Worst thing that could of happened to him was score 2 goals last night. Gonna have the fans all super high on their new top prospect. Gonna reinforce his " I can play in this league" mentality and further his sense of entitlement. Seen this show before.
Hopefully he gets in the lineup for the playoff series, he'll look great sitting on the bench for for the last 2 periods of the game. Sven Erixon

It will ultimately depend on how the Canucks handle him and how much he has grown as a person. But yeah, getting two goals in a meaningless game where he has no responsibilities and is facing a team that quit on the season six months ago is going to be great for pumping fan expectations sky-high.

Flames in the playoffs. 4 Flames prospects in the NCAA championship 5 draft picks in the first 3 rounds.... and there are 100 pages on a guy that wanted a change of scenery. Can we move this thread to the 'OT' board? Maybe create a 'what if's' board?

Argh. Why won't Hartley, Burke and Treliving give him a chance? What does he have to do to show that he deserves top minutes?
