I know there's been a lot of confusion over how to spell his name, and it comes up in almost every thread about him, so I'm going to clear it up once and for all:
It's spelled S - V - E - N

Why the - in his name? Is that like the two dots over the A in his last name?

Truth is, after seeing Rattie's hi-lights, I can't wait to see Sven and Stempniak! Both likely 3rd line, good puck skills and Something to prove!

Does anyone know what Sven will be doing during the locklout? Would it not be wise to have him in Portland right now, considering the possibility of a lockout? I've searched everywhere to find out info on Sven's plans.....
For fear of creating a thread that was simular, I was thinking a thread showing where our prospects are playing this year and where we may be able to watch the games would be a good idea. Anyone know if thats out there already?

If I'm not mistaken, he cannot play in the NHL if the lock out ends and he's in the CHL unless it's an emergency call up again.

Is he eligible for the AHL this year? (turning 20 in October)
If he is then that's my guess as to where he would play.

Yes, because he turns 20 before the end of the year, he doesn't have to be sent back to the WHL (I think he could be sent to Portland, but then he wouldn't be able to play in the NHL until his WHL season was over).
I'm pretty sure he'll play in Abbotsford if there's a lockout.

Portlands training camp has begun already, and Sven isn't a part of it. If there is a lockout he will be in Abbotsford. Given that you are only allowed 3 over agers on a team in the WHL, and that Portland has 5 at camp, I think they have moved on from Baertschi.

I don't think Sven would be considered an Overager in the CHL this year.

How will that work with his contract?

This will be the first year of his three year ELC. He'll get paid his AHL salary in Abbotsford.
It's the same thing that would happen if there wasn't a lockout but he had a bad training camp and got sent to the AHL.

If he played in the CHL, his contract would slide again.
However, I am under the impression (not certain by any means) that if he plays in Abby this year, and doesn't play 5 more games for the Flames, that he still doesn't lose a year of his contract - is that correct?

Incorrect. Playing in Abbottsford would use up a year of his deal.

That is what I would have assumed. However, there was a discussion on the Flames site about this. I have included a quote from one post:
-----
I saw someone post on HF boards that because of his age/date of birth Baertschi will be considered a 20 year old in the CHL next season but because his NHL contract is allowed to slide until he is considered a 20 year old by NHL standards meaning Baertschi could play the entire 2012/13 season in Abbotsford and his ELC would continue to slide.
I was a bit unsure so I looked around for similar cases and sure enough I found one in Zach Hamill. His ELC never began until the 2009-10 season, but he spent the entire 2008-09 season with the Bruins AHL affiliate in Providence after leaving Everett of the WHL, although Hamill did spend 4 season in the WHL so that may play a part.
-----
I am not saying that this is right, just bringing it up for discussion.
...and then this...
-----
Since Baertschi was born in 1992 and not 1993 he is eligible for the AHL next year.
And since he signed his ELC at the age of 18 it can "slide" for 2 seasons if he doesn't play 10 NHL games.
So he can definitely play in the AHL next year and if he does not play 10 NHL games, his NHL contract will not actually begin yet
