This 50 plus (almost) white Calgarian agrees.
I like a lot of stuff about Nenshi, but his ego does get the best of him sometimes and it does detract from him as mayor.

Pretty sure the Calgary Police does the criminal checks for taxi drivers in Calgary so no need to do the same screening process.

Looks like there's going to be an investigation. Of note is that Nenshi said to council today that nobody asked questions about how he knew certain people slipped through the Uber screening process.
One journalist (Trevor Scot Howell) has tweeted that what Nenshi said is "patently false", and that the question was repeatedly asked but never answered.
Also, Nenshi said this today:
“I made allegations than it went further than that, and that’s not fair. That’s not right. The limit of my knowledge … is that we know anecdotally that someone slipped through. And I’m very sorry that I made it sound like there was a lot more to it than that,” Nenshi said.
Keep in mind that in video, he said the city "sent" sex offenders to become Uber drivers.

3 words would get him out of this pickle.
"I was drunk"
I would also accept "I was high".

You cannot do things like fill out job applications or things like credit applications without their knowledge of signature.
Is it criminal, I'm not a lawyer, but I think that will be a question that will be asked,
|
There has been no suggestion of that! It's actually a very serious issue to allege fraud in many cases. just saying.

Pretty sure taxi drivers have RCMP background checks.

I guess this depends on which side of the spectrum you are on sometimes.
Im sure many felt the same way about Ralph.
Pierre Trudeau is equally a divergent character.
Obviously Donald Trump has some of that sentimentality as well.
People love charismatic and outspoken politicians. But people hate them just as much, especially if they disagree with them on things.
But I agree with you, I find some of Nenshi's mannerisms or scrums to be a little much (i dont see it in this video though, really) but he is a packaged deal.
OOPS, sorry for the stream of posts..

In the US, there's one-party and two-party (all-party) consent states. In one-party, only one person must be aware the conversation is being recorded. In two-party, everyone needs to be aware. Massachusetts is a two-party consent state with a catch, the recording must be 'secret.' Massachusetts is pretty stringent, and as it's very apparent that Nenshi didn't know he was being recorded, it would probably be ruled against the driver but the driver certainly has a case that it was not a secret recording if the camera was obvious and moreso if it had led lights indicating it. Would be pretty grey.

Perhaps "another one of my drunken stupors" would appease?

An Uber driver is charged with sexual assault stemming from an incident early Tuesday morning in Markham.
Shortly after midnight, a 34-year-old Markham woman was picked up by an Uber driver in the area of Yonge Street and Major Mackenzie Drive in Richmond Hill.
The driver took the woman to a parking lot in the area of 16th and Woodbine avenues in Markham, where the woman was sexually assaulted.

This article seems fitting here. Also from Reddit:
Quote:
I think it is important to note that Austin bent over backwards trying to address the stated concerns of Uber/Lyft.
First fingerprints were too expensive, so the city said they will pay for them. Then they said the process of getting them was too inconvenient to get given how the companies recruit so the city said they will have mobile fingerprinting stations which they will run at onboarding events (among other things) and would handle the determination of the pass/fail. Finally they said it would just plain slow down recruitment and be a logistical nightmare with their existing drivers so the city strengthened the language about the mobile fingerprinting, phased in the requirement, and put in language requiring the city to evaluate the program and make changes if it was affecting onboarding.
There are a number of other parts of the ordinance which I could see Uber/Lyft having a problem with (geofencing event pickup/dropoff, extensive data sharing, bans on weather related surge pricing, etc) but their publicly professed main issue was the fingerprinting.

And i'd like to point out that Ubers less evil cousin Lyft is also pulling out of Austin so it's obviously not like this is uber just trying to be dicks.
