How could a party that has never been held accountable for 50 years do all these things?!

You just know her time as premier will end as all her other elected positions ended, abject failure of her own doing.
Calgary school board, failed.
Wildrose, failed.

Failing is the one thing she may actually be good at.

lol, you must think I care a lot more than I actually do. It's just that this kind of argument is so dumb. It leads to the idea that we don't have a functioning democracy or that the results of our elections aren't fair and reflective of the populace.

The best way to show you care less than someone thinks you care is to respond to their joke post with a humourless rebuttal.

It doesn’t lead to anything, it’s just facts. But I’m not particularly worried your opinion on an argument I wasn’t making.

2 elections ago 10% of Alberta voted for the Alberta Party and not one person in government was elected to represent them. This caused a completed collapse of the party and forces those voters to seek refuge in other camps (mostly the ANDP).

So no, in a lot of way our elections aren't fair and reflective of the populace.

Your argument is one that isn't valid. The UCP won the last election unfortunately and based upon the Westminster system which we have used since the foundation of the government here it is fair to say that the UCP with Smith as their leader were given a mandate by the province (however slim it was). Do I like the fact that a leader can be parachuted in, not really. But I am aware enough to know it happens with such frequency that it isn't of a concern to me.

Our democracy is not very good. It's just a lot better than most other options. But there are certainly better options out there. But it's difficult to implement improvements.

I don't think it's silly to point out the weakness of her mandate. Even within FPTP she only won 56.3% of the seats. That is actually the lowest of any governing party in the history of the province. The next lowest was 58.6% in 1917

The NDP had 62.1% (there are a few other elections that were lower than this, too)

It’s also super lame that you can’t even point out how our democracy works while making no value judgement at all on it without being accused of attempting to undermine our democracy.

Thicken up that democratic skin, comrades.

Incidentally, the only two people I have blocked on Twitter are Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, and David Parker, the owner of the UCP. Hashtag: PWNED

Nenshi pretty well sums it up. Corruption runs through the UCP like water through taps.

Corrupt conservative provincial politicians? Like a time-honored tradition 'round these here parts.

Can't wait to see the mental gymnastics that conservatives / UCP voters in this thread will use to justify this; this gonna be good. Actually wait... they're all in the federal thread, conveniently ignoring the trainwreck they supported here in Alberta.

Yeah and if you bring this up there, especially if it’s after someone mentioned a Trudeau “scandal” 5, 10, even 20 posts before? Well, then you’re just a deflecting defending Lib communist. I bet you’re even LYING about having voted for Trudeau!

Trudeau!

In fact, they must just start screaming at you for even mentioning that thread without hating on Trudeau. They gonna kill you bro.

Some people seem to have perverted the "federal politics thread" to only mean the government in power. And if you're talking about anything that isn't slamming the Liberals, you sympathize with hypercaffenated lefties scared of fake problems like creeping authoritarianism and low-IQ populism.

UCP are masters of the grift.

Wish I was half as good as them. It's the only way to get rich quick in their 'Berta.

Wonder if Smith's grift levels will rival that of the Redford days. Or she's already surpassed it lol
