I'd propose some sort of knowledge test, such that if you want to be Alberta Premiere and you don't understand you are not American and can't pardon whoever the #### you want, or you don't understand how marginal tax rates work, you are immediately disqualified from ever holding office. In an ideal world, voters would take that into consideration. But since that protection seems to be lacking, perhaps some legislation to protect the rest of us?

Thank you for explaining back to me what I’m explaining to you. Insightful.
I’m not suggesting any alternative, I’m just stating facts, max.

Does that include a spelling test?
Sorry, friend, couldn’t resist.

Cool. So if Nenshi’s NDP win the next election, conservatives will be correct in saying he’s only the premier because of 63k votes in a province of 4.4 million people, not because a majority of Albertans wanted him to lead the government.

My guess is that Smith played these convoy fools for, umm.. suckers knowing that their understanding of constitutional law is based on American tv show depictions. Caveat emptor.

Anyway, this latest brouhaha apparently centers around Smith and several cabinet members plus staff being flown by private jet to Vancouver to attend Canucks/Oilers playoff games from a corporate suite courtesy a private college courting changes to the province's postsecondary funding model. All of this while failing to report it to the Ethics Commissioner.*

You don't have to guess at anything, she played herself for a fool.
Quote:
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith confirmed Friday she may pardon people who were given tickets during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an exclusive interview with the Western Standard, Smith said she would be open to the idea and is considering pardoning people who were charged during the pandemic for breaking the imposed rules.
"My intention would be to deliver a blanket amnesty. It was inappropriate political decisions that led to that inappropriate enforcement and so it seems to be a political decision to say we made a mistake. We're sorry, won't happen again," Smith said.
"I think the experts let us down so I'm not interested in taking any advice from them."
|
[not linking back to Western Standard for obvious reasons]
Quote:
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she is no longer pursuing amnesty for COVID-19 health-rule violators because Canada doesn’t work that way.
“Because we’ve been so influenced by the (United) States, I think that some people think that a premier has the same power as they do in the States of clemency or offering pardons,” Smith told the Shaun Newman podcast Monday.

The vague "some people" is clearly her. She is the "some people," proven by her previous comments.

No, because both of those things can be true. He’d only be the premier because a small number of people elected him to be the leader of the NDP, and the majority of people voted for their NDP MLA. The majority of Albertans, even of Albertans voters, may or may not have wanted him to lead the government.
Roughly half of the UCP base didn’t want Smith to be the leader, but it’s likely they voted UCP anyway whether they wanted her to be the Premier or not.

Holy crap. What private college in Alberta has a jet and corporate suites in arenas? Or did they just charter and rent a suite?
Edit. Rumours are it's Makami College. They must make a fortune training massage therapists and security guards.

IAIs operate under their own legislation but are partly governed by the Post-secondary Learning Act, and work towards the province's 5 adult learning system principles. IAIs have different governance and accountability requirements than other post-secondary institutions; their Boards are not appointed by the Minister and they are not required to have a government-approved mandate as part of their Investment Management Agreements.
*MaKami College is not publicly funded.**

I thought they changed the rules around gifts and stuff like this recently so that they could accept things with a higher value and not have to report them. I don't remember the details but I remember people calling it the bribery bill.

A lot of these "colleges" also own the contracts that employ their barely educated graduates. Just walk into any long term care facility and you can see for yourself the "Health Care Aids" that can't speak 3 words of English, and don't understand why you should change your gloves and wash your hands between wiping someone's a$$ and brushing their teeth.
They make money hand over fist both "training" these people and then farming them out at poverty wages.

Exactly.
The only difference is that she first became premier, prior to the provincial election, based on the leadership race and her own by-election. So for a while, yes, she was a premier we had no say on.

Of course she did. I bet she took in every game, at various people’s expense.
