Seems to me like the terms of the Florida pick/Calgary pick for Montreal is basically saying that Montreal bet on the Flames to finish in the 'mushy middle'.
So next year, the Flames better be really good, or they better be really bad. Not sure that you can necessarily bet on Markstrom being this good again, or that Wolf can come in and do what Markstrom is doing in his first season.
I am all aboard team tank for next season then. Makes the most sense to me. Hanifin and Tanev both out, plus hopefully Markstrom.
Do whatever it takes to get Mangiapane scoring again next season, and flip him at the deadline. The interesting thing to look at will be how both Sharangovich and Kuzmenko are doing - re-sign or flip - and I guess it will depend on how they feel staying in Calgary, how much success they are having, their demands will be, and what kind of a market there is for them.
Either way, I am sure that the Flames will make this deadline, as well as perhaps in the off-season, to simply avoid being in the mushy middle. Can you imagine the uproar if this team finishes 10th worst, and still has to give up that pick, while Florida finishes in the high 20's? This is just an extra incentive to retool a little deeper and acquire a better pick next season.

So, a lot of talk in the last couple pages about Tanev losing a step. A post from earlier this year showing that he's still (at least at that time) the Flames best overall defenceman. Now, players at his age are inevitably going to slow down... all I'm saying is I don't see Tanev slowing down just yet and certainly not where he drops down in the Flames depth chart. He's a very, very good defenceman.

I agree that Wolf needs a veteran G to shelter him a bit and mentor him in his rookie season. That doesn’t have to be Markstrom though. They could sign someone like Quick to fill that role if they trade Markstrom.

He probably wants to win a Stanley Cup, so the only way he stays is if the Flames pay way over market value and that's not a good idea.
If the best offer you get for Tanev is a 2nd round pick at the deadline, then you just take it. He's not going to sign a market value extension here.
|
Yeah, I don’t mean sign him at all costs, but if it makes sense, do it, don’t just trade him for the sake of trading him.
If he doesn’t want to be here then obviously you don’t force the issue and it’s an easy trade to make.

Maybe Treliving would send over a 4th round pick for Oesterle.

Would you take a 1st from Edmonton for Tanev or is dealing him there out of the question?
I don't understand why Edmonton wouldn't move their 1st this year when Winnipeg and Vancouver have already made significant moves and their window is this season + next only.
Makes so much sense for them to pay the price just depends if Conroy is willing to send him there.

Absolutely not.
I'd rather take a 2nd rounder than potentially give Edmonton the missing piece.

This is crazy to me
Get the best asset . I honestly could not care if Edmonton wins IF it is because we got a better asset
Get your own house in order before worrying about your neighbors

I dunno, if they win you’re talking about a draft difference of maybe 20-25 spots? Big deal in the first round, much less significant a drop off in the second and beyond.

Because we saw how ridiculous the media was on their "streak". Multiply that by 1000 if they win the cup. There are other teams that will offer similar packages to what Edmonton would offer, and that slight upgrade is not worth hearing about the great Oilers for the next 5-10 years

I'd take Holloway and a 1st for Tanev, no problems there. That'd be a decent return.

And send Tanev with orders to suddenly lose his game.

And thats only if you plan on living for 5-10 more years.
They win and we'll be hearing about this for 30 years. Not worth it.

To be fair, we are already hearing about that now. Even when they're in last place and firing their coach, every intermission of a Flames game the media feel the need to cut away to check in on McDavid and Draisaitl.
I'm not sure that winning or losing will make Oiler fan any less greasy.

Tavev likes it here in Calgary - he'd be the perfect double agent! Take 'em down from the inside.

I’d rather them be talked about for 30 years as the team that could never win a cup with “the greatest player to ever play the game”

It won’t make them any less greasy. That doesn’t mean you turn around and spoon feed them arguably the single biggest thing they need. Unless they are paying through the nose for Tanev, the Flames should not be trading him to Edmonton. I think the conversation should start with Holloway plus a first. Otherwise, they can pound sand.
