There is definitely an element of salesmanship (and cargo cult slavishness amongst the fan base), but I also think Apple works really, really hard at making sure the product fits.

The size of the iPad is one example - people might claim that it’s too big, but when Jobs says a 7” is too small for a tablet, he does it with the absolute conviction that comes from who knows how many prototypes.

Apple is the kind of place where they would absolutely obsess over something like screen size. I have no doubt they’ve probably built a prototype iPad in every mass produced LCD size from the iPhone all the way up to the current size and beyond, looking for the one size they felt fit.

Of course, they are also wrong on some things, and have to backtrack - the “nobody wants to watch video on an iPod” line is probably the most famous. But, at least, to their credit, when they do have to go back, they do it right - the iPod Touch is a pretty incredible media player.

When I emailed support they said the Live aspect should roll out November 7th in a different app. Who know's.

20$ seems steep for this app...not sure. International has the same app on iPhone (premium). They didnt release that in NA because they have carrier agreements with Verizon and Bell...

The iPhone version was free, and is now available in Canada - I have it on my iPhone complete with push notifications for the teams I follow, etc.

I can't believe they want me to plunk down $20 for their iPad app

Edit - or maybe there is a difference, the ipad one is called premium..but still, this is confusing. I'd plunk down the twenty if they said the live stuff is coming for GC live subscribers, but I am afraid of spending 20 now and being told to spend another 20 later

The basic iPhone version is free. International has the Premium version which is what the iPad one is with Game radio, Higlights, Condensed Games etc. It isn't on NA stores.

EDIT: Yah 20$ seems ridiculous IMO. I'll wait to see if this Live app comes out, as it should be free since it willneed a GCL login

Yeah and theScore iPad app is excellent.

Having said that, I *might* buy it. 20$ for a season, hehe.

Yeah it's tantalizing - I am thinking it would be a nice adjunct to watching live games, having the stats and stuff...but $20 is a lot

Yeah. Although, many people buy apps that only cost a few $, and rarely use it. With this, at least you know you'll use it for the whole hockey season.

Doesn't that $20 version also include live-game radio and post-game highlights?

The condensed games are what interest me. Those were in the playoff app last season and they were very cool. For $20 I just don't know. I'm sure I'm going to end up buying it, but I'm surprised to hear they want to roll out the streaming app separately. The only explanation I can think of (that was already mentioned) is that it'll be free to GC subscribers. That would make sense as you don't want to stick GC subscribers with a $20 app to buy.

I've really wanted an app that I can view the previous nights highlights on, so I think I'm going to pick it up. $20 in the whole scheme of things isn't that much, but I'll be annoyed when the price inevitably drops. Such is the life of the sucker early adopter.

Why pay for an app to view the previous night's highlights when you can surf via safari to the NHL website and watch them yourself for free?

NHL press release confirms Live app for iPad "later in 2010". lol.

It should contain the stuff in The premium app, and it should be free for GCL subscribers!

Are you saying that it SHOULD or does the press release say that? Do you have a link to the PL?

Using CBC's Hockey iPad app to watch the game tonight - streaming quality is not HD, but acceptable quality for times when a TV isn't available. I sprang for the season bundle at $20 to watch all the games they stream, otherwise I think it's either $1.99 or $2.99 per game, I don't recall which.

The quality of the iPad's speaker always amazes me...

Ugh. The last time I checked their videos were all flash but now they're not. Not so sure about that $20 now. It's a well put together app, but that is a touch annoying.
