D700 or D800 for you?
Congrats either way!

As of 10:00 am this morning I am the proud new owner of the D800!
What a beast of a camera, took me a bit to figure out where everything is.
So far so good! Happy Birthday to me.

my wife and i are heading to calgary later this week.... in the off chance that the forecast is 'lightning favourable', what is a good location to get pics?

I'd want to be anywhere with a good view of downtown (depending on where the storm is)... lots of options for that. Samus Road, Crescent Road, Nose Hill Park (beware of people trying to give you Stampede tickets), 26th St SE, Scotsman's Hill, maybe Signal Hill. Just don't go too far up the hills in lightning storms!
Also: Depending on when exactly you're here, GlobalFest (fireworks competition) starts on Thursday and runs every other day thereafter.

hey SebC
thanks for the locations!!!
GlobalFest - AWESOME!! we're heading to calgary thursday and then back to kelowna on monday - so we should be able to catch the thursday/saturday shows.
where do they launch the fireworks from? any great locations to 'setup the tripod'?? i'm assuming the shows start around 10 or 10:30?

Global Fest is at Elliston Park. You can see them from outside but in my opinion it's best if you have a ticket to go inside the park - that way you'll be able to see the low stuff and the reflections off the lake. Then it's pretty simple - the way the park is set up, most of it has a pretty good view. Tickets are $15, but be warned they can sell out. Not sure when they stop selling the advance tickets, but you might be able to get them ahead of time. And yes, as I recall they usually start around 10.

Ragz - great shot!!!
if i can offer a little advice (and this is just personal preference... i'm no 'money guy' when it comes to photography! ha!) - i would recommend straighten the horizon... so rotating the pic a couple degrees counter clockwise....

Thanks for the advice! I was really not sure on rotation as it was hill, but thanks for the tip!

I never worry about the visual horizon (unless it's the ocean) since my camera has a built-in leveling meter. Often, while looking through the view finder, I'll check the leveling meter thinking I am level and I'm off by more than I thought.
Great shot!
I also live in Airdrie and have been meaning to get out and shoot the nearby sea of hay bails... but you beat me to it lol
