Please no Ortio for a 2nd.. It's going to be the anti-kipper trade and haunt us for years.

I don't know - I could live with a 2nd for Ortio. That's not too bad is it?

It isn't bad at all - if you are sure Ortio isn't going to amount to anything.
Otherwise, the Flames will probably end up spending that 2nd round pick on another goalie prospect and waiting 4-5 years for that prospect to get to the point where Ortio is now - reasonable optimism and ready for a good long look as a backup (if things go well that is).
It would be of little interest to the Flames I am sure in making a trade for a 2nd round pick.

Stupid question:
How much salary can you retain in a trade? What if you traded ramo or hiller and retained all but like 900k for some kind of a pick?
You would essentially be buying a pick (albeit an expensive pick) and decluttering the crease.

I don't quite agree with you there. 2nd round picks are valuable trade commodities at the deadline and at the draft. Arguably more valuable than a 3rd string goalie. If Hartley thought Ortio was the goalie of the future he would be playing.
If the ultimate goal is to land a true #1 then the pick may be more helpful.

Looknat what Treliving did with multiple second round picks this past summer. A second rounder is valuable currency at the draft or deadline to add to the team. Also it could add to the strong prospect base.
I think the Flames future number 1 is Gillies anyway. Having said all that I prefer to trade Hiller or Ramo for a 3rd than Ortio for a 2nd but would rather trade Ortio for a 2nd than give Hillernor Ramo away for nothing

@BuffaloSabres: The #Sabres have recalled goaltender Nathan Lieuwen from @AmerksHockey. http://t.co/AvXUvn4tqX
@JoeYerdon: No update on Lehner and the MRI. Bylsma said he'll be out at least a week.

Wednesday proved why you don't keep Ramo over Hiller - they are equal parts good and inconsistent - Hiller has several hundred more NHL games under his belt and ever so slightly better numbers.
If Lehner is out for even a month, Ramo should be a Saber. It doesnt matter if it takes 50% retained.

Ortio hasn't done enough to distinguish himself as leaps and bounds better than either Ramo or Hiller at this point, and that's what needs to happen for a rookie to take a veteran's job. Especially in net.

A 2nd round pick could be more valuable than a 3rd string goalie for sure.
The question is: is Ortio a 3rd string goalie? I think almost everyone here would agree that he is not.
Note: please don't quote Hartley's comment as a rebuttal. We know what he said, the issue is what did he mean? And for me, like GreenLantern said, all it means is that he hasn't passed the vets YET. Today. Give it time, he's only played a handful of games.
The Flames have invested far too much, and gotten Ortio this close to taking over, simply to trade him for a pick and start over. Unless they think he doesn't have it (which I strongly doubt)

Based on what we saw from Ortio last year I think he is on par with Ramo, but I have some concerns that this may be his high watermark.
If gillies looks like he is a year away, Ortio might be the odd man out.
The pressure for Ortio may be coming from below rather than up top

Gillies would have to shoot the lights out this year in order for the Flames to accelerate his development that much.
And if that were in fact the case (very unlikely) then yeah, they might be less concerned about Ortio.
Otherwise, no way.
Goalies are unpredictable. You need to develop as many as possible. When you get one this close to becoming a solid NHLer, you don't just throw in the towel the first time he let's in a soft goal.

Ortio has a more compact style than Ramo. His economy of movement is terrific, and his fundamentals are better than either vet. Hiller and Ramo are prone to lazy mental lapses, not being tight on posts and things of this nature.
When I watch Ortio play, I see a goaltender who's style lends itself to replicating results. He reads the play very well, physically he can make every save you need him to. It's simply a matter of seasoning.
When I watch Ramo, I see a freak who can steal you games as easily as he can lose them. With Hiller, replace freak with vet, and shout out to his fashion choices.

Gillies is almost certainly more than a year away. We already have two of the highest paid pending free-agent goalies. Not sure that a better starter can be found on that list, either - and we know the list will be much smaller by the time July 1 rolls around.
Ortio stepping up and tapping into upside we all hope is there would sure be nice. Finding a back-up to pair him with would be a lot easier than trading for a starter for the next few seasons.
EDIT: Not sure why the link didn't show all the FA goalies, here it is via old fashioned copy pasta.
