I won't mind missing out this season if we can get next year's 1st overall pick.

He's big (duh) and usually hits pretty hard. He's by far the best Petes player IMO although that isn't saying very much. Seems pretty good at cycling the puck and has a pretty good shot when he is in close. He's been much better since the Petes acquired Hunter Garlent to give him someone to play with.

Foot speed would probably be my biggest concern, along with inconsistency. I would go stretches of each game it seemed where I barely noticed him.

Again, not an official scouting report by any means but just the observations I had in limited viewings and focus.
Flames will get the 6th or 7th pick with the way they are playing so it'll be down to the second tier of prospects.

Virtanen looks like he has NHL level skills already in terms of skating and shooting. Not as big or as tough as Ritchie, but probably be a better scorer.

I'm intrigued by Ritchie. You worry he'll be Zach Kassian, but then the upside is Milan Lucic and wouldn't that look good opposite Johnny Gaudreau?

Yeah, I'd rather defer to next year if we're only getting 1 top 3 pick in our franchise history. We'll be having this same conversation this time next year too. Except Buffalo will probably be 25 points lower than us and Carolina will be down there too.

^ and Calgary is already playing really, really well for a team that is in rebuild year one. I am still baffled by those that think we will be worse than this year.

I think we will. Cammy will be gone, they might try to move Glencross, they'll sign some Free Agents to overpriced contracts to add cap.

Next year we should be worse, but we still won't be as bad as these other horror shows.

I still may be in the minority (or the only oddball) for trading our second round pick in 2015 as part of a trade for another first in this years draft.

Perhaps, I'd prefer we make moves for more firsts in next years draft, but the cost will be higher since it's a better draft (at least at the top)

I think if the Oilers did pass on Yakupov, he wouldn't have been taken until maybe the 6th pick (Anaheim).

I know Columbus for 100% sure weren't going to take him. Montreal wasn't either, unless Galchenyuk was gone. Islanders had it in their mind to take only defencemen for the entire draft (they didn't even interview Reinhart at the combine!) and Toronto didn't like him.

We can be 3rd-6th worst again next season and still have a shot at McDavid/Eichel, especially if this top 3 lottery goes into effect. Keep that in mind.

I was hearing Ehlers was blazing fast and Virtanen is pretty quick. I'd like to get someone with gamebreaker speed but he obviously has to be a bigger guy for Burkie to draft him. Ehlers is too small and is projected in the middle so no need to go off the board for him. Anybody know the top 5 fastest skating prospects are?

I don't get to catch too many games in the Juniors.

If we're not able to draft 1 of Ekblad/Reinhart/Bennett/Draisaitl this year... I'd rather Burke sent our #5/6 pick to Carolina for Skinner instead of drafting 1 of DalColle/Virtanen/Ritchie

I know Skinner is a good player but I doubt Burkie would want a small shifty player especially with us having Gaudreau coming in our system? No way he makes that trade.

I wouldn't call him small @ 5'11'', 200lbs.

I really dont understand this logic... Trade guys that you know and have value and then sign free agents to make the cap floor??

That's not a bad idea actually. That, or trade our #1 pick for an even later pick and take the team's next year 2015 pick, and we give them something additionally.

I like skinner, but do the flames need another small lw?
If Burke is trading pick for young established player I would hope for some size. At the very least a rw with a right hand shot.

Or a young defenseman with top 4 ability

I dont think we should trade our pick for a young player if its top 5 if you are trading for a young player with a draft pick you are going to be giving up some potential for less risk. At the point we are in a rebuild we don't have the assets or line up where we should be worrying about speeding up development. This run lately has been nice but we will be bad this year and the next.

The earliest i would consider trading our first is 2016 and even then not until we are on the upswing. If Burke is really targeting a defenseman and we can't get Ekblad we could try and trade our 2014 first to a defense heavy group like nashville. That way we could get an established young defenseman for our pick and they could get a forward. It would have to be Josi+? for it to make any sense for us and i doubt Nashville would make that move.
