I blame it on the large number of Winnipeggers in Calgary. There is not one single merge in Winnipeg. They are all Yields.

I hate drivers who can't be bothered to sweep all the snow off thier car. You have some that leave the snow on thier back window and then there's the jackboots who leave the snow on thier roof. There's nothing worse than driving down the Deerfoot and some asshats snow flies off his roof onto your windshield blinding you until you get the wipers going.

In Lethbridge on Thursday morning I was behind a Dodge Neon whose rear was completely covered in snow. Couldn't see the center brake, tail lights or anything. Not even a tiny bit of light getting through. I lane changed away and was right next to her, and a few minutes later a cop rear ended her... hard. I had to get to work, but I was kinda curious to see the aftermath of that accident.

I can only assume you are doing option 1.

What makes you think I am driving on a 4 lane highway?

Based on your response I can only assume you have a piss poor attitude and you have never done any of the defense driving things that I suggested. So yes. Again, I assume you do option #1.
Do I seriously have to say that you go into the left hand lane only if you are on a divided highway.
Do you understand the part of moving over into the left hand part of your lane? About keeping an eye on the person who may pull into the road? Do I have to explain that to you?

Dunning-Kruger effect.
Seriously, you folks need to read up on this. It explains tons of behavior in the world, and not just on the roads. It can be a valuable tool for helping find true experts, and to detect people who think they are experts but aren't (which is even more dangerous than people who know they aren't experts, but project themselves as such).

The worst is when it becomes a sheet of airborne ice, if its big enough it could smash your windshield.

Haha that reminds me of my ex who thought she was a great driver, but had received a ticket on two separate occasions for tailgating...a cop.

Does this Dunning-Kruger effect include people who think they have the ability to diagnose a 3rd party via a post on a message board ?

What about the fact that I think I am pretty good at my job? Oh crap ...
Actually, it does make a lot of sense. If I think I am bad at something then I will put more effort into it which will make me better. If I think I am good at something, then I will slack and then by extension be worse at actually doing it. Also, if you think you really know everything but you really don't then chances are you are totally missing some important information that would make you better at it, whereas if you really do know everything you have a better understanding of where your shortcomings are and by extension think you are worse because of all the gaps, however minor, you see in your knowledge.

It's not a diagnosis, it's a phenomenon. It's a measurable and demonstrated form of cognitive bias.

Well you assumed wrong buddy and now you look like a dork for making such an assumption. Like I posted before, I do everything that you so thoughfully assumed that I didn't do. You assumed that I drive on a 4 lane highway (which I don't). You failed to realize that no matter how close you are watching a vehicle stopped on a highway approach, they can drive out in front of you at any time.
Now that you have made yourself look like a dork for making all your assumptions you are now trying to back track and make some absurd suggestion that moving over into the left part or "your" lane would do anything to avoid a collision on a 2 lane highway when some tard decides to proceed directly in front of you.
You might aswell stop now before you make yourself look any more of an idiot.
FYI: I have drove more than 750,000 km since the age of 12 without 1 collision. I have both defensive and emergency driver training. I can only conclude that since you are being so stubborn about this, that you are in fact one of these types of drivers that proceed unsafely from a stop sign. Someone who who has no concept of other drivers on the road or distances between vehicles approaching and your own vehicle.
Let me know and I can suggest a few driver training schools for you.

No, Dunning-Kruger would suggest that an increased awareness of the potential for cognitive bias and errors in metacognition would make you more likely to underestimate competency since you realize you are likely to experience the phenomenon.
It's also possible this thread is comprised solely of exceptional people with exceptional driving talent. Heck one of you could be Jackie Stewart for all I know.

Exactly. My Fiancee defends Winnipeg's lack of merge lanes because it was built up before cars. So? Calgary has them, so use 'em FFS.

I wonder if people complaining about the snow on the rear window also condemn cargo vans, cube vans and semi trucks, who don't have rear windows?
While annoying, is snow blowing off of a vehicle any different than driving in a blizzard?

No it isn't really that much different.
When driving in a blizzard, you are expecting a blizzard. When driving on Deerfoot at 8am when there isn't a blizzard you don't really expect your windshield to be instantly covered in snow.
