Yeah, that platform basically sounds like it was written by Ric McIver in a skirt. Although I guess even man-Ric wants more C-Train.

And once again, Nenshi is able to respond to a "platform" release of a candidate within hours:

This is what I like about Nenshi - provides a professional response to other platforms and issues in a mature, timely fashion.

This man has a serious passion for politics - I hope people are taking notice.

How does Barb Higgins have almost as many votes in this poll as Nenshi? Baffling...just baffling.

Because half of the men on CP want to bone her. Even MRCBiology!

When she says we need to take a breather I think she has no clue with the current infrastructure issues. If anything this slower time is the time to fast track some programs and projects to ramp up for the inevitable need on the horizon.

I can't see her platform captivating a lot of people. I just don't think that most people care about platforms to begin with.

That's the problem, nobody is. People don't take the time to notice/research these sorts of things, and inevitably just end up voting for the name they can make some vague connection with.

I mean look at the people who are conversing in this thread. There's like 5 people hammering the same point (valid ones at that), and the rest of the board doesn't give a crap.

Jesus dickballs, this guy almost knows 'too' much about city hall and all the issues. While the other candidates skim the surface with broad platforms that appeal to everyone, Nenshi is being decisive on his stance early on.

Almost feel compelled to somehow volunteer for the guy. I'd feel stupid if we ended up with Higgins or McNo as a mayor when we could have had someone as smart as Nenshi.

He's gonna need help, like any candidate. If you believe in him volunteer or donate. It's an important election.

But how can I, a single voter, make a difference?

Is Nenshi trying to mobilize the MRC crowd?

Like anything, strength is in numbers and every person counts.

Every candidate has a list of tasks that need to be done and they need people to carry them out.

This is mine http://www.jane4ward4.com/contact

Most candidates have them listed somewhere on their sites. If you don't see it for the one you want to help --- call them up and ask.

One of the things I feel is very important is that if you get polled, answer with your preferred candidate and not who you feel you might end up strategically voting for later. With first past to post, early polls often function as the de facto first rounds of the election. That means that now's the time to support your first choice. There's a time and place for strategic voting, but it comes much later.

God Nenshi just seems like such a likable, intelligent, decisive person. I haven't researched a tonne into platforms or really been following things closely but I did see his TEDx talk when somebody posted it here and it seems like even then he already had a plan for how the city should grow. Not your typical politician, it would seem.

Plus he has an iPhone app. How cool is that?

Ordinarily I'd have my "online polls aren't scientific" spiel all ready to go. But.... it is a little odd that Nenshi is crushing the Calgary Sun's online poll, isn't it?

Well, matters of my own bias aside, online polls are still worthless. In fact, I think there's a major challenge in polling such a small population when voter turnout is expected to be so low. I think we're basically still in the dark when it comes to the mood of likely voters in this election.

Its only surprising because its the Sun. In reality though its just another online poll and we all know how easy these are to rig. A few twitters to supporters and some facebook messages and it might look like the next mayor is mainly concerned about chicken farming.

If any candidate is crushing like that its either McIver or Higgins.

Well, common sense says you're right--but the truth is that we're in slightly uncharted waters here. We know that there's a good deal of anti-incumbency sentiment, but we don't know if that will be enough to hurt McIver. We know that there are a lot of candidates, but beyond the top two we're actually guessing when it comes to even name recognition, let alone actual support among likely voters.

The fact is--no poll that doesn't have a very solid likely voter screen along with a decent sample size is going to give us anything like an accurate picture of what's going to happen in this election. Period. We still haven't seen one, and until we do prognostication is sort of pointless.
