Higgins has a bit of an advantage with the media on her bandwagon now.

One quote forwarded by DJ Kelly had her saying that her platform was that she is a woman.
Yeah, that's a strong platform for sure!

No that was a comment based on an iphone typo from someone at the event.
She said "being female is NOT my platform"

Ugh, I can only pray her and McIver split the uninformed voter's votes.

As much as I don't think Barb Higgins would be a good mayor, you have to know she is going to have the best campaign...
I'm still undecided, it's a few months away. When is official nominations?

The most likely effect, particularly early on will be she will capture much of the "hey, I've actually heard of that person!" vote (from less engaged people) that McIver has had a monopoly on so far. I think it will tighten the race all around.

Did anyone see that Metro poll last week? Don't know the background of the poll and it's results don't really mean much for the election but it was interesting none the less.
They called up about 200 Calgarians and asked them who they would vote for based on the list of all candidates at the time. McIver took well over 60% of the poll, Hawkesworth came in second. Obviously it was a small sample and highlighted name recognition as significant factors at this stage. Of note, Nenshi was dead last (compare that to the CP site poll).
With Higgins now in the race, I guarantee you that she takes over the lead from McIver based soley on name recognition. She's far more attractive to the fairweather voter then McIver is.
Nenshi has a lot of ground to cover in traditional media still if he has any shot of even getting into the average Calgarians mind. I wonder how many people who would vote for Nenshi will actually show up and vote on the election day.

Furthermore Kent Hehr pledged to release his donors names months ago.
I guess overall this is a pretty weak policy with things already in place.
I also wouldn't say that he is taking any risk at all in limiting his spending to $650k or thereabouts. From what I've seen and heard in conversations with a number of sources the funds for this years campaign are smaller than what they were in years past. I doubt he could raise $650k, so its really not a limit at all in that sense.

A friend of mine already said she'd vote for Barb. When I asked her why, her answer was "oh cause she's a woman". Awesome.

Yes it is somewhat unfortunate that her and most others in this campaign are holding their policy cards so close to their chest, but if you watch her announcement and Q and A she does actually reveal some important things about herself and her viewpoints. Certainly they aren't detailed policies, but she set the tone on her 'collaborative approach' to decision making with council, empowering city staff, distinguishing the mayor's role as that of 'leader rather than manager', also expressing her opinion on Bronconnier's tenure, particularly his role in getting lots of infrastructure built, her social issue background but fiscal conservatism.

I have nothing but apathy for the civic election. I am considering tendering my vote to the highest bidder or proxy voter.

Why not bother to do some research, it's not that hard. Municipal elections have the biggest impact on your day to day life.
